Chapter 11 - The House We Thought Was Gone

The old house stood empty.
Daniel remembered it as the place where his parents had raised him.
The place where he had learned to ride a bicycle.
The place where his mother had died.
The place where Richard had told him everything would always be okay.
Now the windows were boarded.
The garden was overgrown.
The front door was unlocked.
Inside, the air was cold.
Daniel walked through the hallway.
Every room contained a memory.
His childhood bedroom.
The kitchen.
The staircase.
Then he stopped.
There was a faint mark on the wall.
A height chart.
Daniel touched the lines.
His name.
His age.
Emily's name.
He smiled sadly.
Then he noticed another name.
Claire.
He turned toward Richard.
“Why is her name here?”
Richard looked stunned.
“I don't know.”
Michael approached the wall.
“Wait.”
He scraped away a layer of paint.
Beneath it was a small metal panel.
A keyhole.
Daniel remembered the key from the lake house.
417.
He inserted it.
The panel opened.
Inside was a small recording device.
Daniel pressed play.
James's voice filled the room.
“If you're hearing this, I'm already gone.”
Richard closed his eyes.
James continued.
“I know Richard will try to bury this.”
Daniel looked at his father.
“But he doesn't know everything.”
The recording paused.
Then James said:
“The money was never mine.”
Daniel's heart pounded.
“It belonged to a group that has spent years buying influence through private accounts.”
Michael whispered.
“Keep listening.”
James continued.
“And the person who helped me move it was not Rebecca.”
Daniel froze.
A second voice appeared.
A woman's voice.
Claire.
“I warned you this would happen.”
James answered.
“I had no choice.”
The recording ended.
Daniel stared at Richard.
“You said James did everything alone.”
Richard shook his head.
“I was wrong.”
Then the device clicked again.
A final recording started automatically.
This time, Rebecca's voice could be heard.
“If Daniel finds this, tell him the truth.”
A pause.
“His father isn't the person who betrayed him.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Rebecca continued.
“But the person standing next to him is.”
May you like
The recording ended.
Everyone turned toward Michael.
