Chapter 1 - The Door We Walked Through

The night before everything changed, Daniel had believed his family was simply difficult.
Not dangerous.
Not criminal.
Not capable of destroying one another.
Just difficult.
He had spent years telling himself that.
Whenever Rebecca mocked Noah at family dinners, Daniel called it teasing.
Whenever Richard criticized his parenting, Daniel called it concern.
Whenever Emily sat silently beside her mother and watched everything unfold, Daniel assumed she simply wanted to avoid another argument.
And whenever Mason deliberately pushed Noah too far, Daniel told his son to ignore him.
That evening, however, something had finally snapped.
Spaghetti covered the hardwood floor.
A glass had rolled beneath the dining table.
Noah stood frozen beside his chair, his face burning with embarrassment.
Mason was already complaining.
“He threw it at me!”
“I didn’t!” Noah shouted.
Daniel looked at his son.
He knew Noah.
The boy could be stubborn, emotional, and occasionally impulsive.
But he did not throw plates at people for no reason.
Richard slammed his hand onto the table.
“Make your son apologize right now.”
Daniel stared at his father.
“Dad, you didn’t see what happened.”
“I saw enough.”
Rebecca folded her arms.
“Mason said Noah called him a jerk.”
“He did,” Noah admitted.
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?”
Noah lowered his eyes.
“Mason took my phone.”
Mason laughed.
“I was just looking at it.”
“You changed the password,” Noah said.
“I was joking.”
“You posted something from my account.”
Mason shrugged.
Richard looked annoyed.
“None of that matters.”
Daniel turned toward him.
“It matters to Noah.”
Richard pointed toward the spilled food.
“This is my house.”
Daniel said nothing.
“My rules.”
Rebecca smiled faintly.
“There you go.”
Daniel felt something inside him harden.
He had heard those words before.
My house.
My rules.
My family.
Always the same message.
Daniel was welcome only when he agreed with them.
Richard pointed toward the front door.
“Apologize or leave.”
Silence filled the room.
Daniel looked at Noah.
His son was trying not to cry.
Daniel stood.
He picked up Noah’s coat.
“Then we’re leaving.”
Rebecca’s smile disappeared.
Richard stared at him.
“You’re seriously doing this?”
Daniel helped Noah put on his coat.
“I’m not forcing my son to apologize for defending himself.”
Emily finally spoke.
“Dad, maybe we should calm down.”
Richard ignored her.
“You’ll regret this.”
Daniel took Noah’s hand.
“I probably will.”
They walked toward the door.
Richard shouted behind them.
“Don’t come crawling back!”
Daniel stopped.
He turned.
“No.”
Richard stared at him.
“I won’t.”

Then Daniel walked out.
He did not know that those words would become the last thing his father would ever say to him before begging for help.
