Chapter 14 - The Husband Who Came Back for the File

Julian returned three nights later.
Not because police found him.
Because Clara baited him.
She publicly announced through her company that an emergency audit had identified potentially recoverable family assets.
Then she leaked one specific rumor through a contact Julian trusted.
The termination file was fully decrypted.
It was not.
But Julian did not know that.
Clara waited inside the downtown office of Hartwell Financial under police supervision.
The building appeared empty.
Cameras covered every entrance.
Ortiz had tactical teams positioned on two floors.
At 11:43 p.m., the service elevator opened.
Julian stepped out.
He wore black.
No white dress shirt.
No arrogance.
Only urgency.
Clara stood behind the glass wall of the conference room.
Julian saw her.
He smiled.
“I knew you couldn’t stop.”
She stayed seated.
“Where’s Marcus?”
His smile faded.
“Why would I know?”
“He disappeared with you.”
“Marcus makes his own bad decisions.”
“And Teresa?”
“Mom always believed jail was for poor people. This will be educational.”
Clara almost laughed.
“You abandoned her.”
Julian shrugged.
“She’d abandon me.”
He approached the table.
“Where’s the file?”
“First tell me what happened to my mother.”
His face showed nothing.
“She died of cancer.”
“Jason Wells.”
His eyes shifted.
Barely.
Clara saw it.
“You used that name at the hospital.”
“No.”
“You visited her.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She had something I needed.”
“The trust.”
“Yes.”
“Did you kill her?”
“No.”
“Did Teresa?”
Julian laughed softly.
“Mom is many things. A murderer isn’t one of them.”
“Then who gave Evelyn the sedative?”
“I don’t know.”
“Liar.”
“Believe whatever makes you feel powerful.”
Clara stood.
“You planned my death.”
“That recording was taken out of context.”
“You discussed making it look accidental.”
“You were never in danger.”
“You hit me because I stopped paying your mother.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“That was a mistake.”
“The slap?”
“The timing.”
Clara stared.
There he was.
The real Julian.
Not remorseful.
Not ashamed.
Only annoyed by consequences.
“What is the termination file?”
“Insurance.”
“For whom?”
“Your mother.”
“Against you?”
“Against everyone.”
“What happens if it opens?”
Julian’s smile vanished.
“Things that should stay buried become public.”
“What things?”
“Your mother wasn’t protecting you, Clara.”
“Then who?”
He looked at her for a long moment.
“Adrian.”
She did not react.
Julian’s eyes narrowed.
“You know.”
“Yes.”
“Daniel finally told you?”
“He’s in custody.”
Julian laughed.
“Of course he is.”
“Why do you need my biometric key?”
“I don’t.”
“Then why are you here?”
His gaze moved toward her phone.
“To make sure you never open the file.”
Clara’s heartbeat increased.
“Why?”
“Because Evelyn’s recording names people.”
“Who?”
“People who will kill both of us if they think it’s about to surface.”
Clara studied him.
“For the first time, you look scared.”
“I’m not scared.”
“Yes, you are.”
Julian took another step.
Police watched through hidden cameras.
Clara needed him to reveal more.
“Who controls Hawthorne?”
Julian said nothing.
“Victor Shaw?”
“Victor was a servant.”
“Teresa?”
He laughed.
“Mom wishes.”
“Richard?”
“Dad couldn’t control breakfast.”
“Then who?”
Julian leaned over the table.
“You think Hawthorne is some little group of businessmen hiding tax money?”
“What is it?”
“A network.”
“For what?”
“Leverage.”
“Blackmail.”
“Influence.”
“How many people?”
“Enough.”
Clara lowered her voice.
“And Evelyn discovered them.”
Julian’s face changed.
“Your mother built part of it.”
Clara froze.
“What?”
“She didn’t just discover my grandfather’s accounts.”
“No.”
“She organized them.”
“You’re lying.”
“Ask Adrian.”
“She was trying to return stolen money.”
“That came later.”
Clara stared.
Julian smiled faintly.
“Evelyn Hart wasn’t some innocent accountant who accidentally found a ledger.”
“What was she?”
“One of the best financial architects my grandfather ever hired.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
“She created the structures Hawthorne still uses.”
“No.”
“And when she tried to leave, people got nervous.”
Clara felt cold.
“That’s why she hid Adrian.”
Julian nodded.
“And you.”
Sirens erupted outside.
Julian turned toward the windows.
Clara had not expected sirens.
Neither had Ortiz.
Someone had triggered the building alarm.
The lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the conference room.
“Move!” Ortiz shouted through Clara’s hidden earpiece.
Julian lunged.
Clara stepped backward.
A gunshot cracked.
Glass shattered.
Clara hit the floor.
Emergency lights flickered red.
Julian was gone.
Then Clara saw blood.
Not hers.
A trail led toward the service corridor.
Police rushed in.
They followed it.
At the elevator, they found Julian.
Alive.
Shot through the shoulder.
He was laughing.
Ortiz grabbed him.
“Who fired?”
Julian looked past her at Clara.
“That wasn’t for me.”
Clara’s stomach dropped.
“What?”
May you like
Julian smiled through the pain.
“The shot missed you.”
