THE NIGHT HER ATM SHUT DOWN / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Account That Should Not Exist

The police arrived eleven minutes later.

By then Julian had changed tactics.

The screaming stopped.

The insults stopped.

He buttoned his cuffs, washed his hands, and became the charming corporate consultant Clara had married seven years earlier.

He told the officers there had been an argument.

A misunderstanding.

An accidental collision near the table.

Clara stood in the foyer while a female officer photographed the swelling on her cheek.

“Did he strike you?”

“Yes.”

“Open hand or closed fist?”

“Open hand.”

“Once?”

“Tonight.”

The officer paused.

Clara understood the question beneath the question.

“Has he hurt you before?”

Julian was close enough to hear.

Clara looked at him.

“No.”

His shoulders relaxed slightly.

Then she added, “But he has restrained me before. Taken my phone. Blocked doors. Threatened financial consequences. Tonight was the first time he hit me.”

The officer wrote everything down.

Julian’s expression hardened.

Teresa began protesting from the dining room.

“This is ridiculous. Families argue.”

The officer ignored her.

Clara gave Daniel permission to send photographs of the financial records to her secure office account.

She did not open them until she was sitting in the back of a police cruiser, waiting for an escort to take her to a hotel.

The first document looked ordinary.

BANK OF WESTFIELD

ACCOUNT HOLDER: JULIAN R. VANCE

The balance did not.

2,842,611.43 dollars.

Clara stared at the number.

Julian had told her he had less than twenty thousand dollars in personal savings.

He had claimed that his consulting income had dropped during the previous two years.

He had asked Clara to cover mortgage payments three times.

She scrolled downward.

There were transfers into the account from businesses Clara did not recognize.

Stone Harbor Advisory.

Ridgewell Capital Management.

North Crest Imports.

And then she saw one she did recognize.

VFS Holdings.

Clara sat straighter.

VFS Holdings was connected to the family support account.

She had seen the abbreviation before.

But the account she funded each month was supposed to pay Teresa and Richard’s household expenses.

It was not supposed to move money into Julian’s private account.

She called Daniel.

“What exactly did your auditor find?”

“A pattern.”

“What pattern?”

“The family support account is acting like a funnel.”

Clara looked toward the mansion.

Police lights flashed across its windows.

“How long?”

“We’re still tracing it.”

“How long, Daniel?”

“At least five years.”

Her throat tightened.

She had only been funding it for three.

“Then where did the money come from before me?”

“That’s what worries me.”

Clara looked again at Richard, now visible through the front window.

He was standing alone.

“Richard knows.”

“I think so.”

“Why?”

“Because one of the older transfers originated from an investment account registered to him.”

Clara closed her eyes.

“How much?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Nearly four million dollars.”

Her eyes opened.

“Richard doesn’t have four million dollars.”

“He did.”

Past tense.

Clara stared at the screen.

Daniel continued.

“There’s something else.”

She almost laughed.

“Of course there is.”

“Your name appears in a document attached to the account.”

Her fingers froze.

“What document?”

“We don’t know yet. The file is encrypted.”

“What’s the filename?”

Daniel read it slowly.

“CV TERMINATION EVENT.”

Clara stopped breathing.

The police officer opened the cruiser door.

“Ma’am, we’re ready.”

Clara barely heard her.

“Daniel.”

“I’m here.”

“What is a termination event?”

“In finance, it can mean many things.”

“And in this account?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked through the window again.

Richard had disappeared.

Julian stood in his place.

Watching her.

Then Clara’s phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

DO NOT OPEN THE TERMINATION FILE.

May you like

A second message arrived.

IF YOU DO, RICHARD DIES FIRST.
