THE NIGHT HER ATM SHUT DOWN / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - The Wedding Tape

Clara watched the recording in a federal evidence room.

The video began outside the church where she married Julian.

She remembered that day as sunlight, music, flowers, and her mother’s absence.

Evelyn had been dead for two years.

Clara had carried a small photograph of her inside her bouquet.

On the tape, the camera followed guests.

Richard.

Teresa.

Marcus.

Daniel.

Victor Shaw.

Clara froze the image.

“Victor was at my wedding?”

Daniel, sitting across the room with investigators, nodded.

“I didn’t know his connection to your trust then.”

“You knew his name.”

“Yes.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

Clara looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I was scared.”

“Of Julian?”

“Of everyone tied to Hawthorne.”

The video continued.

At the reception, Julian disappeared into a side hallway.

Victor followed.

Then Teresa.

The surveillance camera tracked them into a service corridor.

No audio.

Twenty minutes later, Julian emerged smiling.

Victor looked angry.

Teresa carried a white envelope.

Investigators had enhanced part of the image.

The envelope read:

HART PRESERVATION TRUST.

Clara whispered.

“They stole documents at my wedding.”

Daniel nodded.

The video changed.

Someone had recorded a later conversation inside Harbor Point.

Julian’s voice.

“We need her signature eventually.”

Teresa answered.

“She trusts you.”

“She doesn’t trust anyone completely.”

“Then make her.”

“What if she learns about the trust?”

“She won’t.”

“And if Evelyn’s termination clause activates?”

Julian laughed.

“Then we make sure Clara’s death never looks suspicious.”

Clara became perfectly still.

No one in the evidence room spoke.

On the screen Teresa asked, “Accident?”

Julian answered, “Eventually.”

Clara stopped the video.

Daniel looked sick.

Ortiz said, “We have enough for conspiracy discussions, but we need context. This recording appears to be years old.”

Clara stared at Julian’s frozen face.

“He planned my death.”

“Possibly.”

“Don’t say possibly.”

“Clara, legally—”

“He planned my death.”

Ortiz remained quiet.

Clara pressed play.

The recording continued.

Then Richard entered the room on screen.

He looked furious.

“You are not touching her.”

Julian laughed.

“You had thirty years to fix this.”

“I said no.”

Teresa turned.

“You don’t get to say no anymore.”

Richard stepped toward Julian.

“If anything happens to Clara, I go to police.”

Julian smiled.

“No, Dad.”

He reached into a folder.

“You don’t.”

He held up a photograph.

Richard stopped.

Clara paused the video.

“What is he holding?”

Technicians magnified it.

A car.

Nighttime.

A damaged guardrail.

Someone lying beside the road.

Clara looked at Richard in the recording.

His expression had collapsed.

“What did Richard do?”

Ortiz said, “We don’t know.”

Daniel whispered.

“I might.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

He looked ashamed.

“Twenty-three years ago, there was an accident involving a Vance company vehicle.”

Clara waited.

“A woman died.”

“Who was driving?”

Daniel looked toward the screen.

“Richard.”

Clara exhaled.

“And Julian knew.”

“Yes.”

“That’s how he controlled him.”

“Probably.”

Clara looked at Teresa.

“What about her?”

May you like

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“She was in the passenger seat.”
