Chapter 8 - The Fall of Richard Bennett

After Claire’s final words, Evelyn Shaw entered the center of the ballroom carrying the evidence folder.

Richard attempted to regain control.

“This is a private family disagreement,” he announced. “The celebration will continue.”

No musicians resumed playing.

No guests returned to their conversations.

Evelyn approached him.

“It is also a corporate matter.”

Richard recognized her and stiffened.

“What are you doing here?”

“Representing Claire Bennett, the controlling beneficiary of the Eleanor Bennett Trust.”

A group of board members exchanged alarmed glances.

Evelyn handed Richard a document.

“You are formally notified that your authority as trustee ended when Mason Bennett was born. All transactions involving the trust are frozen pending an independent audit.”

Lorraine gripped her husband’s arm.

“Richard, what does that mean?”

“It means nothing,” he said quickly.

“It means,” Evelyn corrected, “that Mr. Bennett used assets he no longer controlled to secure loans connected to this event.”

Whispers spread through the room.

One of Richard’s oldest business partners stepped forward.

“Is that true?”

Richard’s face reddened.

“The funds were temporary. They would have been restored.”

“Did Claire authorize them?” the man asked.

Richard said nothing.

Julian returned from the dressing room.

Brielle followed several steps behind, her face streaked with tears and her left hand bare.

Lorraine noticed immediately.

“Where is your ring?”

Julian addressed the guests.

“There will be no wedding.”

Lorraine gasped.

Brielle looked as though she had been struck by the words, though Julian’s voice remained calm.

He continued.

“I cannot marry into a family that treats dishonesty as loyalty and cruelty as inconvenience.”

Richard moved toward him.

“You are making a serious mistake.”

“No,” Julian replied. “I nearly made one.”

Reporters near the rear of the hall began taking notes.

Richard turned toward Claire.

“Look at what you have done.”

Claire met his gaze.

“I gave birth to a child.”

“You destroyed your sister’s future.”

“Her future was never mine to protect.”

“You could have handled this privately.”

“I called privately. You hung up.”

A board member approached Evelyn and quietly requested copies of the financial documents. Another began calling the company’s legal counsel.

Richard looked around the ballroom he had designed to display his power.

In less than twenty minutes, every symbol of that power had turned against him.

The flowers represented money he had taken.

The guests represented witnesses he could not control.

The reporters represented a story he could not bury.

The family photographs displayed on the ballroom screens showed years of carefully manufactured happiness.

None included Claire.

Graham moved closer to Richard.

“You believed her silence meant weakness.”

Richard glared at him.

“You poisoned her against us.”

“No,” Claire said. “You taught me who you were. He simply believed me.”

Lorraine began crying.

“We made mistakes.”

Claire looked at her mother.

“A mistake happens once.”

Lorraine reached toward Mason again.

“Please let me hold my grandson.”

Claire stepped behind Graham’s protective arm.

“You do not get to reject him in private and claim him in public.”

May you like

Lorraine lowered her hands.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that tears would not restore what she had discarded.
