Chapter 5 - The Secret Beneath the Celebration
While Claire rested, Graham contacted an attorney named Evelyn Shaw.
Evelyn had handled Lucas’s estate and had also reviewed documents left by Claire’s grandmother, Eleanor Bennett. Eleanor had founded the family’s first hotel before Richard expanded the business.
Unlike Richard, Eleanor had always recognized Claire’s ability.
Shortly before her death, she created a trust containing thirty-five percent of the Bennett hotel company. Claire would gain direct control of the shares when she turned thirty or became a parent, whichever happened first.
Claire had never been told.
Richard had remained temporary trustee, claiming the company was still completing administrative requirements.
Evelyn had grown suspicious months earlier when hotel funds were transferred into accounts connected to the engagement celebration.
The expenses were not simply extravagant. They had been paid partly through loans secured against assets belonging to Claire’s trust.
Richard had used Claire’s inheritance to finance Brielle’s engagement without Claire’s permission.
Graham learned the full truth shortly after Mason was born.
When he returned to Claire’s room, she immediately saw the anger in his face.
“What happened?”
He placed a folder beside her.
“Your grandmother left you company shares.”
Claire frowned.
“I knew she left some investments.”
“Not some. Thirty-five percent of Bennett Hospitality.”
Claire stared at him.
“That would make me one of the largest shareholders.”
“Yes.”
“My father never told me.”
“The trust transferred to your control when Mason was born.”
Claire slowly opened the folder.
Documents showed hotel shares, financial statements, and loans approved by Richard. Several pages included expenses for flowers, entertainment, private aircraft, jewelry, and renovations to the Grand Bellamy ballroom.
All of it had been charged against funds connected to Claire’s trust.
“They used my inheritance for Brielle’s engagement.”
“They borrowed against it,” Graham said. “And unless challenged immediately, your father may attempt to restructure the debt before the transfer is finalized.”
Claire felt something inside her harden.
The hospital abandonment was no longer an isolated act. It was part of a pattern so complete that she could finally see its shape.
Her parents had not merely forgotten her.
They had taken her patience, her silence, her work, and now her inheritance, believing she would never resist.
“Does Brielle know?” Claire asked.
“We cannot prove how much she knows.”
Claire remembered her sister’s warning not to create a scene.
“She knows enough.”
Evelyn arrived at the hospital forty minutes later. She explained that Claire could immediately freeze further transactions from the trust and demand an emergency shareholder review.
Claire signed the documents.
Her hand did not shake.
“What happens to the engagement event?” she asked.
“The hotel has already been paid,” Evelyn said. “Stopping it now would affect employees and outside vendors more than your father.”
Claire looked at Graham.
“So the celebration continues.”
“For tonight,” he replied.
Claire glanced down at Mason.
“Good.”
Graham raised an eyebrow.
