Chapter 3 - The Call They Refused

Claire woke just after midnight with a deep ache and the unmistakable certainty that something was wrong.
She called her doctor, who told her to go to the hospital immediately.
Claire drove only as far as the building entrance before a nurse met her with a wheelchair. Within minutes, she was surrounded by medical staff asking questions, checking monitors, and speaking in calm but urgent voices.
Her baby was coming early.
Claire’s closest friend, Naomi, was traveling overseas. Graham was attending the military banquet across town. Claire hesitated before calling her mother.
Lorraine answered after the sixth ring.
Music and laughter filled the background.
“Claire?” she said. “It is after midnight.”
“I’m at St. Catherine’s Hospital.”
The background noise became quieter as Lorraine moved away from the ballroom.
“What happened?”
“The baby is coming.”
There was a pause.
“Tonight?”
Claire almost laughed at the absurdity of the question.
“Yes, Mom. Tonight.”
“But the engagement brunch begins in the morning.”
“I know.”
“Have you called someone else?”
Claire gripped the phone more tightly.
“I called you.”
Lorraine lowered her voice.
“Your father is giving a speech in fifteen minutes. We have guests who flew across the country.”
“I’m scared.”
It was one of the few times Claire had admitted those words to her mother.
Lorraine remained silent.
Then she said, “The doctors know what they are doing. We will come after the brunch.”
“That could be ten hours from now.”
“Claire, please try to understand. This weekend is important to Brielle.”
The line went dead.
Claire stared at the screen.
A nurse entered and gently asked whether anyone was coming to be with her.
Claire called her father.
He rejected the call.
She tried again.
This time, he answered.
“What is it?”
“Dad, I’m in the hospital.”
“Your mother told me.”
“The doctors are worried about Mason.”
Richard sighed, and Claire heard voices behind him asking when he would return.
“I cannot leave in the middle of this event.”
“I’m not asking you to stay all night. I’m asking you to come until the baby is safe.”
“Your sister’s future family is here. Walking out would be humiliating.”
Claire looked around the sterile hospital room.
“I might need surgery.”
“Then the hospital will handle it.”
“Dad.”
“Do not do this tonight.”
The coldness of his words silenced her.
“Do what?”
“Turn another important moment into something about you.”
Claire ended the call.
Her hands shook as she searched for Graham’s number.
He answered immediately.
“Claire?”
“I’m sorry.”
“Where are you?”
“The hospital.”
“I’m leaving now.”
“You’re at an important dinner.”
“You are more important.”
He arrived less than twenty minutes later, still wearing his decorated uniform. He entered the room with controlled urgency, spoke to the nurse, and moved to Claire’s bedside.
“You are not alone,” he told her.
Claire looked toward the door.
“They aren’t coming.”
Graham did not insult her parents or offer empty excuses for them.
He simply took her hand.
“Then I am staying.”
Mason was born shortly before dawn.
He was small but strong, with dark hair and Lucas’s unmistakable chin. When the nurse placed him safely beside Claire, she cried harder than she had cried at the funeral.
“Lucas should be here,” she whispered.
Graham’s eyes filled with tears.
“He should.”
Claire looked at her son.
May you like
“But he isn’t.”
“No,” Graham said. “So the people who loved him will stand where he cannot.”
