Chapter 13 - The Brother Who Became Peter Hale)

The story unraveled quickly after that.
And somehow became stranger.
The real Peter Hale had not disappeared exactly.
Six years earlier, he suffered a serious accident while traveling in South America.
He spent months in private rehabilitation.
Afterward, he resigned from the small law firm where he worked and largely withdrew from professional life.
At least that was the official record.
The man Daniel later hired as Peter Hale possessed valid documents.
Valid credentials.
Valid bar records.
Valid references.
But biometric comparison showed inconsistencies.
Maya explained it in Claire’s temporary apartment that evening.
“Someone built a legal identity around a real person.”
Daniel stood near the window.
“Julian.”
“Possibly.”
“Vanessa’s brother had access to Mercer for six years.”
Claire sat silently.
Before the marriage.
Before Aster.
Daniel turned.
“He introduced Aster.”
Maya looked up.
“What?”
“Peter brought the opportunity to me.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
“The year after Dad met Vanessa.”
Daniel nodded.
Every road led backward.
Thomas.
Vanessa.
Grayhaven.
Julian.
Aster.
And eventually Claire.
The authorities detained the man they knew as Peter, but before investigators could question him formally, his attorney arrived.
He denied being Julian Cole.
He denied identity fraud.
He denied knowledge of Grayhaven.
Then he demanded evidence.
“There’s more,” Maya said.
Claire waited.
“They searched his luggage.”
“And?”
“No diary. No Aster files.”
Daniel’s expression tightened.
“What was he carrying?”
Maya looked at Claire.
“Medical documents.”
Claire frowned.
“Whose?”
“Yours.”
The room became silent.
Claire put one hand over her stomach.
“What medical documents?”
“Prenatal appointments. Blood tests. Ultrasound records.”
Daniel crossed the room.
“How did he get those?”
“We don’t know.”
Claire felt suddenly exposed in a way financial theft had not accomplished.
Her pregnancy had been watched.
Documented.
Why?
“Anything about the baby?” she asked.
Maya hesitated.
Claire noticed.
“What?”
“One report has handwritten notes.”
“What notes?”
Maya placed a photograph on the table.
Claire read.
34 weeks.
Female.
No complications.
Then below:
Confirm after delivery.
Claire looked up.
“Confirm what?”
“No idea.”
Daniel’s face had gone pale.
Claire noticed immediately.
“You know something.”
“No.”
“You reacted.”
“Because someone has your medical information.”
“No.”
She stood.
“You reacted to the words.”
Daniel looked trapped.
Claire walked closer.
“What is supposed to be confirmed after delivery?”
“I don’t know.”
“Daniel.”
“I don’t.”
She stared into his eyes.
For the first time since finding the diary, Claire wondered whether Daniel had secrets unrelated even to Vanessa.
He reached toward her.
Claire stepped back.
His hand dropped.
“I swear.”
She did not know whether she believed him.
Maya’s phone vibrated again.
Another message from the unknown sender.
This time no audio.
Just a photograph.
Vanessa.
Standing beside Thomas Hawthorne.
A much clearer image than the one in the storage unit.
Behind them was a hospital.
Claire zoomed in.
A sign revealed the location.
Lisbon.
Her heart pounded.
“My father was in Lisbon.”
Daniel leaned closer.
The photograph was dated four years earlier.
Thomas had told Claire he was in London that week.
Another lie meant to protect her.
A message appeared beneath the photograph.
Your father knew why you mattered.
Claire typed for the first time.
Who are you?
The response came immediately.
Someone who kept my promise to Thomas.
Claire’s hands shook.
Where is Vanessa?
Three dots appeared.
Then:
Closer than Daniel thinks.
Claire typed:
What happens after my baby is born?
The sender paused much longer this time.
Finally:
Ask your mother.
Claire stared at the words.
Then laughed once in disbelief.
“My mother has been dead for twelve years.”
May you like
A final message arrived.
That is what Thomas told you.
