Chapter 10 - The Company Inside the Company)

By morning, the coastal house had become a war room.
Documents covered the dining table.
Claire stopped thinking of Daniel as her husband and began thinking of him as a source.
That distinction made conversation easier.
“Hawthorne owns no operational company,” Claire said.
Daniel sat opposite her.
“It owns assets.”
“Exactly. Real estate, infrastructure holdings, private credit, minority positions.”
Maya added, “And several hundred million dollars in liquid reserves.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Why would Aster want Hawthorne?”
Daniel shook his head.
“They wouldn’t.”
“Vanessa said Aster isn’t the real target.”
“Then someone is using Aster.”
Adrian placed ownership diagrams on the table.
“Grayhaven sits between Mercer financing and three entities.”
He pointed.
“One in Luxembourg. One Portugal. One Delaware.”
Claire followed the arrows.
“And?”
“The Delaware entity owns a convertible position in Aster.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“How much?”
“Enough that if Aster defaults after acquisition, the holder could claim preferred assets.”
“Which assets?”
“We’re finding out.”
Maya interrupted.
“Wait.”
She searched corporate records.
Then stopped.
“Daniel, what happens to Hawthorne collateral if Mercer defaults on the acquisition bridge?”
He answered automatically.
“Lenders can call designated guarantees.”
“Which lenders?”
Daniel named three.
Maya shook her head.
“Not anymore.”
She turned the laptop.
“One assignment changed six weeks ago.”
Daniel read.
His expression went still.
“Grayhaven.”
Claire understood.
“If Mercer buys Aster and then defaults…”
“Grayhaven gets rights against part of the Hawthorne-backed collateral,” Maya finished.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“You signed this?”
“No.”
“It’s your company.”
“I did not sign this.”
“Who could?”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Peter could execute certain financing amendments with CFO authorization.”
“Your CFO?”
“Elliot Crane.”
Claire remembered Elliot.
Polite.
Soft-spoken.
At their wedding.
At Christmas dinners.
At the baby shower three weeks earlier.
A man who had hugged Claire and said Daniel would be an incredible father.
She suddenly felt sick.
“Elliot knows about the trust?”
“Everyone at that level knows the structure exists,” Daniel said.
“But not every detail.”
Maya searched.
“Peter and Elliot both attended Aster diligence meetings.”
Daniel stood.
“Call Evelyn.”
“Why?”
“Because Elliot still has access to Mercer systems.”
Claire looked at him.
“You’re suspended. He isn’t.”
Daniel grabbed Maya’s spare phone.
“Exactly.”
Maya took it back.
“You’re not making calls from here.”
Daniel glared.
She did not care.
Claire spoke.
“Maya, call the board.”
Within ten minutes, Evelyn Ross joined a secure video conference.
She looked as if she had aged five years overnight.
Claire explained Grayhaven.
Evelyn listened without interruption.
Then she said, “Elliot resigned twenty minutes ago.”
Daniel swore.
“When?”
“His resignation arrived by email.”
“Where is he?”
“We don’t know.”
“Freeze his access.”
“Already done.”
“What did he download?”
Evelyn became quiet.
Daniel understood.
“What did he download?”
“Transaction files.”
“How many?”
“Enough.”
Claire leaned toward the screen.
“Anything related to Hawthorne?”
“Yes.”
Her heartbeat accelerated.
“What?”
“Collateral schedules.”
Maya closed her eyes.
Daniel stood.
“We need law enforcement.”
Evelyn looked exhausted.
“Peter is contacting regulators.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice was immediate.
“Do not let Peter control this.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“Why?”
Claire played Vanessa’s recording.
When it ended, Evelyn looked shaken.
“Is that Vanessa Cole?”
“Yes,” Claire said.
“I thought she left the country.”
“So did everyone.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
A question passed silently between them.
Where was Vanessa now?
Claire’s phone vibrated.
Another message from the unknown number.
An address.
Nothing else.
Adrian searched it.
“Storage facility outside Boston.”
Daniel stood.
“No.”
Claire looked at him.
“What?”
“You are not going.”
Claire almost smiled.
“You no longer get to make that kind of sentence.”
“I’m serious.”
“So am I.”
“Claire, whoever is sending these messages could be setting you up.”
“Or helping me.”
“You don’t know.”
“Neither do you.”
She stood slowly, one hand supporting her lower back.
Daniel looked at her stomach.
“That is exactly why you aren’t walking into a storage facility.”
Claire met his eyes.
“Daniel, for months you made decisions for me because you convinced yourself you knew what was best.”
He said nothing.
“I am done living inside decisions made by frightened men.”
The words landed harder than shouting would have.
Daniel looked down.
Claire turned to Adrian.
“We go carefully.”
He nodded.
“Very.”
Maya stood.
“I’m coming.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“So am I.”
Claire looked at him.
“No.”
“If this involves Mercer, I need to see it.”
“You need many things.”
“Claire.”
She studied him.
Then nodded once.
“You stay behind Adrian. You touch nothing. You make no calls. And if I tell you to leave, you leave.”
Daniel almost argued.
Then stopped.
“Fine.”
Two hours later, they reached the storage facility.
The unit door was already unlocked.
Adrian opened it.
Inside were six cardboard boxes.
One folding chair.
A laptop.
And dozens of photographs attached to the wall.
Claire stepped inside.
Every photograph was of her.
Claire leaving the penthouse.
Claire visiting her obstetrician.
Claire at the grocery store.
Claire at her mother’s grave.
Claire and Daniel eating dinner.
Claire asleep beside the penthouse window.
Her breath caught.
Daniel went pale.
At the center of the wall was a photograph of Claire taken three days earlier.

Beneath it, someone had written one sentence in black ink.
SHE IS THE KEY.
