Chapter 7 - The Dinner of Accusations

Three days after Valeria left the hospital, the Aranda family gathered for what Esther called a private reconciliation dinner.

Valeria did not attend.

She had moved into a quiet residence owned by a friend of Dr. Márquez. Only Camila, the doctor, and Alejandro knew the address.

Alejandro entered his parents’ dining room alone.

The long table had been prepared as if nothing had happened. Candles burned beside crystal glasses. Family portraits watched from the walls.

Esther sat at the head of the table.

Rafael occupied his usual chair at the opposite end.

Two uncles, an aunt, and several adult cousins had been invited. All held positions in the family company or foundation.

Esther rose.

“Where is Valeria?”

“Safe.”

“She should be here to explain herself.”

“She has explained enough.”

Alejandro remained standing.

Esther gestured toward his chair.

“Sit down.”

“No.”

A nervous silence moved around the table.

Alejandro placed copies of the clinic records before each family member.

“My mother arranged an unauthorized prenatal test using a sample that did not belong to me. She then used the false result to force my wife into signing an annulment agreement.”

His uncle Martín frowned.

“Those are serious allegations.”

“They are facts.”

Esther lifted one page and barely glanced at it.

“The investigators have not concluded anything.”

“The clinic payment came from your foundation account.”

“For legitimate medical services.”

“You denied knowing the clinic.”

“I denied managing daily appointments.”

Alejandro distributed another document.

“This is a transcript from the hallway recording.”

His aunt covered her mouth as she read.

Esther did not touch her copy.

“An illegally obtained recording proves nothing.”

“It proves Valeria repeatedly asked to leave.”

“She was distressed.”

“It proves you told her she would remain on her knees until she signed.”

Esther’s voice sharpened.

“I was trying to prevent a public catastrophe.”

Alejandro looked down the table.

“There it is. Not denial. Justification.”

Several relatives lowered their eyes.

Esther turned toward Rafael.

“Tell them what we discussed.”

Rafael remained still.

“Rafael.”

He lifted his head.

“We discussed concealing the accusation until after the board vote.”

Alejandro’s cousin looked shocked.

“You knew?”

“I knew enough to stop it,” Rafael said. “And I did not.”

Esther stared at him.

“What are you doing?”

“What I should have done years ago.”

“You will destroy this family.”

“No,” Rafael replied. “I helped you teach us that honesty was destruction.”

He placed his wedding ring on the table.

The soft metallic sound carried through the room.

Esther’s face lost color.

“You are being theatrical.”

“I am leaving.”

“You have nowhere to go.”

“I have had nowhere to go for thirty years.”

The family watched in stunned silence as Rafael rose.

Esther’s control slipped.

She turned to Alejandro.

“This is her work. Valeria entered this family and poisoned everyone against me.”

“Valeria asked for one thing,” Alejandro said. “The right to be believed.”

“You barely know her.”

“I know she refused your money.”

“Because she wanted more.”

“She refused the company shares in the marriage agreement.”

“Because she knew the child would give her leverage.”

Alejandro leaned forward.

“You keep calling my child leverage because that is the only language you understand.”

Esther looked around the table, searching for support.

“Are all of you going to allow an outsider to take control?”

Aunt Clara spoke quietly.

“Valeria is Alejandro’s wife.”

“She is temporary.”

“She has been married to him for four years.”

“Four years is temporary compared with blood.”

Rafael looked at Esther from the end of the table.

“You said the same thing about me after thirty-eight years.”

Esther’s eyes flashed.

“You were weak before I met you.”

“And you made sure I remained that way.”

Alejandro placed one final envelope on the table.

“This is my resignation as executive chairman nominee.”

Every relative began speaking at once.

Esther rose so quickly that her chair struck the wall.

“You cannot resign.”

“I already did.”

“The market will collapse.”

“Then the company was never stable.”

“The board will choose Martín.”

“Perhaps.”

“You have spent your entire life preparing for this position.”

“I spent my life preparing to become someone I no longer respect.”

Esther walked toward him.

“You think surrendering your authority will protect her? Without the company, you are nothing.”

Alejandro smiled without warmth.

“That is what you needed me to believe.”

“You will come back when she realizes you are no longer useful.”

“She loved me before I became chairman.”

“She loved the name.”

“Then I will give it up.”

The room fell silent again.

Esther stared at him as though he had spoken in another language.

“You would abandon the Aranda name?”

“I would abandon anything that requires me to become you.”

For one brief moment, she looked not powerful or furious, but wounded.

Then the expression disappeared.

“You will regret humiliating me.”

Alejandro picked up his coat.

“This is not humiliation. It is consequence.”

He walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he turned to the family.

“If any of you attempt to contact Valeria without her permission, I will consider it harassment. If anyone repeats the lie about my child, my attorneys will respond.”

Esther folded her arms.

“You still have no legitimate paternity result.”

Alejandro looked at her.

“The independent results arrive tomorrow.”

A flicker of panic crossed her face.

He noticed.

“So you already know what they will say.”

Esther said nothing.

That silence followed him out of the room.

The next morning, Dr. Márquez called.

The independent test confirmed that Alejandro was the baby’s biological father.

There was no uncertainty.

No ambiguity.

No space left for Esther’s story.

But the result also revealed something unexpected.

The coded DNA sample used in Esther’s original test belonged to someone closely related to Alejandro.

Someone from the Aranda family.
