Chapter 4 - A House Full of Witnesses

After Alejandro left for Madrid, the penthouse changed.

At first, the differences were small.

The regular doorman was replaced by a security employee Valeria did not recognize. The driver reported that the family car was undergoing maintenance. The home internet stopped working in certain rooms.

Then Valeria discovered that calls to Alejandro were repeatedly failing.

Messages remained undelivered for hours. When she used the landline, the operator claimed there was an international connection problem.

Camila noticed the pattern.

“Use my phone,” she whispered.

They tried from the service corridor.

The call connected, but Alejandro did not answer. He was in negotiations and had warned Valeria that he might be unreachable.

She left a brief message asking him to call from a private phone.

Minutes later, Esther entered the kitchen.

“You should rest,” she told Valeria.

“I did not know you were here.”

“I came to help.”

“I do not need help.”

Esther looked at Camila.

“Leave us.”

Camila hesitated.

Valeria nodded, hoping to protect her from being dismissed.

When they were alone, Esther placed a new document on the counter.

“This is your final opportunity to handle the situation discreetly.”

Valeria did not touch it.

“I will not sign.”

“You have not even read the revised terms.”

“I am not leaving my husband.”

“Your husband is in Madrid trying to save a company you are willing to ruin.”

“The company is not being threatened by me.”

“The public will not care.”

“An independent test will prove the child is Alejandro’s.”

Esther’s gaze sharpened.

“You arranged one?”

Valeria realized too late that she had revealed too much.

“I spoke to my doctor.”

“And where is the appointment?”

“That is none of your concern.”

Esther smiled.

“Everything involving my family is my concern.”

She left the kitchen.

An hour later, Dr. Márquez’s office called to cancel the appointment. The physician had been ordered into an emergency conference and would be unavailable for several days.

Valeria contacted the hospital directly and learned that no emergency conference existed.

She called Dr. Márquez’s personal number.

It had been disconnected.

Fear settled over her like winter air.

At noon, Rafael arrived.

Alejandro’s father had always treated Valeria kindly, though his kindness often disappeared whenever Esther entered the room.

He found Valeria in the sitting room and closed the door.

“You should take the settlement,” he said.

She stared at him.

“You believe the report?”

He looked away.

“I believe this can become very ugly.”

“That is not what I asked.”

“Esther says the evidence is conclusive.”

“Esther created the evidence.”

Rafael’s shoulders lowered.

“Do you know that?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because the child is Alejandro’s.”

“I did not mean morally. I meant, can you prove the report was altered?”

“Not yet.”

“Then you are in danger.”

Valeria studied him.

“Are you warning me or threatening me?”

“Warning you.”

“Why?”

“Because Esther does not retreat when she believes the family is at risk.”

“I am part of this family.”

Rafael looked at her with deep sadness.

“That depends on who is defining the word.”

Before leaving, he slipped a small key onto the table.

“What is this?”

“The security office keeps duplicate recording drives in the service level. The old system records even when the main network is disabled.”

“Why are you giving me this?”

“Because I have spent too many years pretending silence is different from participation.”

Valeria closed her fingers around the key.

“Will you help me?”

Rafael’s face tightened.

“I have already done more than she can forgive.”

Then he left.

That afternoon, Valeria and Camila entered the service level through the laundry corridor. The security archive was a narrow room containing monitors, power units, and rows of labeled storage drives.

Most cameras did not record private bedroom spaces, but they captured hallways, entrances, the library, the kitchen, and the service areas.

Camila located the files from the morning Valeria had visited the clinic.

The footage showed Esther speaking with the family driver before Valeria left. Later, Esther gave an envelope to a man wearing the clinic’s badge.

It was not enough to prove the report was fake, but it established coordination.

They copied the files onto a small portable drive.

Then the archive room door opened.

Esther stood outside.

Behind her were two family security employees.

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Esther looked at the drive in Valeria’s hand.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

“Do not make this more difficult.”

“You falsified the test.”

“I protected my son from fraud.”

“You know the baby is his.”

“I know only that you are desperate to remain wealthy.”

Camila stepped between them.

“Mrs. Aranda should be allowed to speak with her husband.”

Esther looked at her.

“You are dismissed.”

“I work for Mr. Alejandro.”

“You worked for this family. That has ended.”

Camila did not move.

Esther turned to the security employees.

“Escort her out.”

As they approached, Valeria slipped the drive into the pocket of Camila’s uniform.

Camila understood immediately.

She allowed herself to be escorted toward the elevator without resistance.

Esther watched until the doors closed.

Then she turned back to Valeria.

“You have mistaken my patience for weakness.”

Valeria held her ground.

“And you have mistaken everyone’s silence for loyalty.”

Esther stepped close enough that Valeria could smell her perfume.

“Tomorrow evening, you will sign the agreement.”

“No.”

“You will.”

“What happens if I refuse?”

Esther glanced toward Valeria’s belly.

The look lasted only a second.

It was enough.

Valeria’s hand moved protectively over her child.

Esther walked away.

That night, the penthouse doors were locked from the outside.

The landline stopped working.

Valeria’s phone showed no signal.

And for the first time, she understood that Esther no longer cared whether her methods could be explained.

She cared only about forcing Valeria to surrender before Alejandro came home.
