Chapter 1 - The Secret Beneath the Blanket

Alejandro Aranda had entered the penthouse bedroom prepared to demand an explanation.

Instead, he found his wife sitting on the edge of their bed as though she had been waiting for permission to breathe.

Valeria’s bare feet rested on the pale carpet. Her cream robe hung loosely around her shoulders, and one trembling hand covered the curve of her pregnant belly. Her face was colorless beneath the warm bedside lamp.

Behind her, the floor-to-ceiling windows framed the glittering city. Alejandro’s mother, Doña Esther, stood near the glass in her dark navy gown. His father remained beside her, silent and rigid.

No one moved when Alejandro entered.

He had returned early from the foundation gala after receiving a strange message from Valeria’s phone. It contained only five words.

Please come home. Don’t call.

He had crossed the city believing there had been a medical emergency. When the private elevator opened, his mother told him Valeria was hysterical and needed rest.

Then he saw his wife.

“What happened?” Alejandro asked.

Valeria lowered her eyes.

Esther answered for her.

“She became upset. Pregnancy has made her emotional.”

Alejandro ignored his mother and crossed the room. He knelt directly in front of Valeria, his tuxedo trousers pressing into the carpet.

“Look at me.”

Slowly, Valeria raised her eyes.

He had known her for five years and loved her for four. He knew the difference between sadness and fear. What he saw in her face was not ordinary fear. It was the fear of someone who believed speaking would make everything worse.

Alejandro reached for her hand.

Valeria flinched.

The movement was small, but it struck him harder than a shout.

“Did someone hurt you?”

“No,” Esther said sharply. “She stumbled.”

Valeria’s fingers tightened over her belly.

Alejandro looked at the white blanket covering her knees. The room became impossibly quiet.

“Valeria,” he said, keeping his voice gentle. “May I?”

Her breathing faltered.

After a long moment, she gave the smallest nod.

Alejandro pulled the blanket aside. The lower edge of her robe had fallen across her legs, and he moved it carefully away.

Dark bruises covered both of her knees and extended along her shins.

For several seconds, Alejandro could not understand what he was seeing. His mind rejected the evidence before his eyes. Valeria had been perfectly well when he left for the gala four hours earlier.

His fingers hovered beside one bruise without pressing it.

Her knees trembled.

Something inside him changed.

He looked up slowly.

“Who did this to you? Tell me the truth.”

Valeria’s lips parted, but no sound came.

Alejandro took her hand and held it carefully.

“You are safe,” he said. “Whatever happened, you are safe now.”

Esther stepped forward.

“Alejandro, this performance has gone far enough.”

He did not turn.

“Mother, stay where you are.”

The command was quiet, but Esther stopped.

Valeria drew one unsteady breath. Both hands moved toward her belly as if she needed to protect the child from the words she was about to speak.

“Your mother,” she whispered.

Alejandro’s hand went still.

Valeria glanced toward Esther and then back at him.

“She said the baby wasn’t yours.”

The room seemed to lose all sound.

Alejandro stared at his wife.

Behind him, Esther gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

“This is absurd.”

Valeria continued before fear could silence her again.

“She said I had to admit it. She said I would stay on my knees until I signed the papers.”

Alejandro’s expression hardened.

“What papers?”

“The annulment agreement. And a statement saying I had deceived you.”

Esther’s composure cracked.

“She is lying because she knows the truth is coming out.”

Alejandro released Valeria’s hand gently and rose.

He turned toward his mother.

Doña Esther had controlled boardrooms, ministers, investors, and every member of the Aranda family for more than thirty years. She had never looked small to him before.

Tonight, she did.

“You forced my pregnant wife onto her knees?” he asked.

“I protected you.”

“From what?”

“From a woman who trapped you with another man’s child.”

Valeria closed her eyes as though the accusation had become physically exhausting.

Alejandro’s father finally spoke.

“Esther, stop.”

She turned on him.

“You agreed that the test had to be done.”

Alejandro looked between his parents.

“What test?”

Neither answered.

He crossed to the bedside table and picked up his phone.

Esther’s voice sharpened.

“Who are you calling?”

“My doctor first. The police second.”

“You will not bring the police into this family.”

Alejandro looked at her with a coldness she had never seen in him.

“You brought this into our family.”

“Alejandro, think about the company.”

“I am thinking about my wife.”

“If this becomes public, the board will turn against us.”

“Then let them.”

“You would destroy generations of work for her?”

He glanced back at Valeria.

She sat on the bed in silence, still protecting their unborn child with both hands.

“No,” Alejandro said. “I would destroy it for what you did to her.”

For the first time, Esther looked afraid.

Alejandro called the family physician and requested an immediate examination. Then he contacted the head of building security and ordered the penthouse locked down. No records were to be erased. No employees were to leave before giving statements.

When he ended the calls, he noticed his father staring at the carpet.

“Did you know?” Alejandro asked.

His father’s silence was answer enough.

Alejandro looked away as if something inside him had finally broken.

He returned to Valeria and wrapped the blanket around her legs without covering the evidence completely.

“Can you stand?”

“I think so.”

He offered both hands and waited until she chose to take them.

Esther stepped forward again.

“You cannot possibly believe her without proof.”

Alejandro supported Valeria as she rose.

“I believe the woman who is frightened of my touch,” he said. “I believe the bruises you tried to hide. And I believe the message she sent when she thought no one was watching.”

Esther’s eyes narrowed.

“What message?”

Alejandro paused.

Valeria looked up at him.

At that moment, they both understood something important.

Esther did not know about the message.

Someone else had helped Valeria send it.

Someone in the penthouse had seen what happened.

And somewhere inside the Aranda home, the truth was waiting to be found.
