Chapter 9 - The Name He Inherited
The recording shattered the fragile trust inside Blackwood House.
Grace listened three times, searching for manipulation in her mother's voice. Laura said the Society had replaced Adrian after a childhood medical crisis. The surviving boy was supposedly another subject trained to believe he was Adrian Blackwood.
Adrian did not defend himself with anger. He requested his childhood medical records and ordered Claire to compare their DNA more deeply.
"You believe this could be true?" Grace asked.
"I believe my entire childhood was curated by liars. Certainty would be arrogance."
Claire's analysis confirmed they were biological siblings. If Adrian had been replaced, the substitute was still Evelyn's son. The question became whether one twin boy had died and another hidden male child assumed his identity.
Ethan listened from the doorway.
"You're Adrian," he said.
Adrian looked at him. "How do you know?"
"Because Noah remembers you."
Ethan described a scene from the hospital nursery: a boy protecting a younger child from a doctor. The boy was called Adrian, but another child called him Gabriel.
Mara searched the Ashcombe files for that name. Gabriel Blackwood appeared once, listed as an unregistered male infant born eighteen months after the twins. Status: transferred.
Evelyn had another son.
The Society may have replaced Adrian with his younger brother after an accident. Yet the man standing before them possessed Claire's twin-level genetic similarity. The records contradicted the biology.
Dr. Reed proposed a darker possibility: the Society deliberately mislabeled children, creating identity confusion as a control technique. Adrian might be Adrian, Gabriel, or both names assigned at different stages.
Thomas regained consciousness under guard. When confronted with Laura's recording, he admitted the message was genuine but incomplete. Laura had worked for the Society longer than he did. She believed identity belonged to documented continuity, not biology. When an eight-year-old boy escaped Saint Orison after another child died, Laura concluded the survivor was an impostor.
"Which child survived?" Adrian asked.
Thomas closed his eyes. "I never knew. Evelyn changed the records before disappearing."
The only definitive evidence remained in the chapel crypt.
Before they could leave, Blackwood House lost external communications. Unlike previous attacks, no armed team approached. Instead, a convoy of police vehicles surrounded the estate.
A warrant charged Adrian with murder, kidnapping, and medical terrorism. News broadcasts showed edited footage making it appear that his men caused the hospital lockdown and abducted Helena Voss.
Mara's superiors ordered her to arrest him.
She refused.
The police cut power and demanded surrender.
Adrian considered fighting his way out. Grace stood between him and the weapons vault.
"If Ethan sees you turn this house into a battlefield, the Society wins. They want him to believe violence is his inheritance."
Adrian looked toward Ethan, who was gripping the stair rail with both hands.
He surrendered.
Police placed him in handcuffs at the front steps while cameras recorded every angle. Ethan ran forward before Grace could stop him.
"He saved me!" the boy shouted. "You're taking the wrong person!"
Adrian knelt despite the officer pulling at his arm.
"Listen to your mother," he told Ethan. "Courage is not the same as fighting. Sometimes it is choosing who you will be while everyone else names you."
They drove him away.
Within an hour, the police transport vanished from tracking systems.
The official report claimed a mechanical failure. Roman found the abandoned vehicle beneath an overpass. Two officers were unconscious. Adrian was gone.
A message had been painted on the inside wall in blood.
BRING THE HEIR TO THE CHAPEL.
Grace knew the Society meant Ethan.
Then Claire found a second message hidden beneath the first, scratched into the metal with a handcuff chain.
Adrian had left it.
DO NOT BRING ETHAN. BURN THE ARCHIVE.
During Adrian's arrest, the press captured a photograph of Ethan reaching toward him. The image spread online with false captions: kidnapped child, crime lord's heir, secret witness. Grace learned how quickly strangers could turn a frightened boy into a symbol for whatever story they preferred. Mara worked to remove the images, but copies multiplied.
Eli's existence was not yet known, but Grace later wondered whether he had seen the photograph from a laboratory screen. Perhaps that was the first time he understood Ethan lived outside the white rooms. Perhaps jealousy and hope began together.
Grace held Thomas's black sun token and faced the choice everyone had designed for her.
