Chapter 12 - Two Sons, One Lie

E-2 called himself Eli.
He said Helena gave him the name because it was close enough to Ethan to create confusion. He remembered white rooms, medical lessons, and repeated videos of Grace's life. He had been taught that Grace abandoned him and raised a replacement.
Yet when he saw her at the school, he did not feel hatred. He felt recognition.
Dr. Reed removed the tracking collar and found a small explosive charge designed to activate if tampered with. Roman disabled it seconds before the timer reached zero.
Eli's blood test revealed the truth the Society wanted them to fear.
He and Ethan were identical twins.
Both were Grace and Adrian's biological sons.
Grace had carried twins, but prenatal records had been altered to show one fetus. During the clinic blackout, the Society stole Eli and left Ethan. Thomas never knew.
Adrian left the room when the results arrived. Grace found him alone in the stairwell, his hands braced against the wall.
"I lost two sons," he said. "One for seven years. One to them every day of his life."
"Then stop counting what was stolen and help me decide what we give them now."
Eli did not trust easily. He flinched at sudden movement and hid food beneath his pillow. Ethan tried to share toys, then became frustrated when Eli answered questions with silence. Their bond was not immediate or magical. It was awkward, painful, and real.
Helena contacted them through the hotel's television system.
She demanded Eli's return in exchange for Grace's mother, Laura, who appeared alive on the screen inside a medical cell. Laura looked older than Grace remembered but unmistakable.
"Do not trade either boy," Laura said before Helena muted her.
The exchange was set at an abandoned railway station.
Mara prepared a rescue operation. Adrian prepared a second one without telling Mara. Grace discovered both and forced them to coordinate.
At the station, Grace walked alone toward Helena while Ethan and Eli remained in armored vehicles at separate locations. Helena brought Laura in a wheelchair and six armed guards.
Grace carried an empty medical case supposedly containing Eli's blood.
"You built your life from stolen choices," Helena said. "Do you truly believe motherhood makes you free?"
"No," Grace replied. "Choosing what I do next makes me free."
She dropped the case.
Mara's agents moved from the rooftops. Adrian's team cut the station lights. Laura threw herself from the wheelchair as bullets tore through the darkness.
Grace crawled to her mother. Helena escaped onto a departing freight train. Adrian pursued her, leaping onto the rear platform, but the train entered a tunnel. He returned minutes later without Helena and with a knife wound along his ribs.
They rescued Laura.
In a secure medical facility, Laura confessed her role. She had joined the Society believing controlled bloodline research could prevent inherited disease. By the time she understood the abuse, she was trapped. She helped Thomas hide Grace but later cooperated in the twin birth operation under threat.
"I did not know which baby they would take," she said. "I told myself one child remaining was better than both disappearing."
Grace struggled to forgive her.
Eli refused even to enter Laura's room.
The archive fragment contained one remaining encrypted directory. Laura knew the password: FIRST CHILD.
Inside were plans for a final Society assembly scheduled in three days. Leaders from twelve international cells would gather at a luxury medical summit in Geneva by encrypted teleconference. Helena intended to use Eli and Ethan as dual carriers to rebuild the archive and transfer control permanently.
Mara saw an opportunity to identify the entire organization.
Adrian saw a trap.
Grace saw both.
They developed a counteroperation using simulated blood signatures. Dr. Reed could create temporary biochemical profiles from the twins' samples, enough to fool the system for several minutes.
Before they began, Ethan entered Eli's room carrying the dinosaur hospital gown he had worn on the night of the attack.
"You can have this," he said. "It was lucky."
Eli examined the bloodstained fabric.
"You almost died in it."
"But I didn't."
Laura's rescue did not produce the reunion Grace once imagined. There was no immediate embrace, only distance measured in hospital tiles. Laura reached out and stopped before touching her daughter's hand. Grace appreciated the restraint. Permission mattered now.
Eli watched Laura from behind one-way glass. He asked whether she had chosen him to be taken. Grace told him the truth: Laura had failed to stop it and would have to answer for that failure. She did not soften the words, but she also refused to make the boy carry an adult's guilt as his identity.
For the first time, Eli smiled.

Then he reached beneath his mattress and produced a black key no one had seen before.
"Helena put this in my hand when I was little," he said. "She told me it opens the room where the first child is still alive."
