Chapter 11 - The Boy with Ethan's Face

Grace rejected the image at first.

It had to be altered, staged, or generated from stolen school photographs. Yet Mara's analysts confirmed the file originated from the archive and contained biometric details impossible to obtain from a casual image.

The second boy had Ethan's face, but not entirely. His hair was shorter. A pale scar crossed his left eyebrow. His posture was rigid, almost trained.

The project file identified him only as E-2.

Dr. Reed compared medical data. E-2's genetic profile appeared nearly identical to Ethan's, with small variations consistent with experimental editing or mosaic development. The Society may have created an embryo from stored material before Ethan was born.

Grace felt the walls closing again.

"Is he my son?"

No one could answer.

Adrian was cleared of the public charges after Mara released evidence of the corrupted transport. He returned to Blackwood House changed by captivity. He moved more slowly, slept less, and kept one hand near a weapon whenever Ethan entered a room.

Grace accused him of seeing danger instead of a child.

"I see both," he said. "That is why I am afraid."

The archive fragment pointed to a research station beneath a private boarding school in Vermont. The school served children of diplomats and industrial families. Adrian wanted to raid it immediately. Mara insisted on warrants and surveillance.

Claire found another clue hidden in her adoptive mother's swan music box: a strip of microfilm listing shipments from Ashcombe to the Vermont school, including one marked BENNETT MATERIAL.

They traveled north under federal protection.

The school appeared peaceful, with red brick buildings and children playing soccer beneath autumn trees. Its headmaster denied all accusations. Ground scans revealed no laboratory.

Ethan wandered toward the edge of the field and stopped.

Across the fence stood E-2.

The two boys stared at each other.

E-2 lifted one hand. Ethan mirrored him.

Before guards could react, smoke canisters erupted across the field. Teachers rushed students inside. Masked operatives seized E-2 and pulled him toward a van.

Ethan ran after them.

Grace caught him, but one operative turned and fired. Adrian stepped into the line of fire. The bullet struck his vest and knocked him down.

Roman disabled the van. Federal agents captured two attackers, but E-2 escaped through a drainage tunnel beneath the soccer field.

The headmaster finally admitted the school had housed E-2 for three months under orders from a charitable foundation. The boy rarely spoke and had no verifiable history.

Security footage showed Helena Voss visiting him.

One captured operative carried a phone containing a voice message from Helena.

"E-2 is not a copy," she said. "He is the correction. Ethan Bennett is the decoy child Thomas allowed Grace to raise."

Grace refused to believe it.

Thomas, still recovering, was brought to Vermont. When shown the image, he began to cry.

He admitted that Grace gave birth during a blackout at a rural clinic. She lost consciousness after complications. When she woke, a nurse placed a baby in her arms. Thomas had arranged the clinic and believed he had secured it, but one hour of camera footage was missing.

"You never tested him?" Grace demanded.

"He was yours. I saw your face when you held him. I chose not to turn love into a laboratory question."

Adrian understood the implication. Ethan could be Grace's biological child, Adrian's biological child, both, or neither. The Society had designed uncertainty to fracture them.

Grace returned to Ethan's room. He sat on the bed drawing two boys beneath a black sun.

"Do you think I'm fake?" he asked.

She held his face between her hands.

"You are the child I carried home, stayed awake for, taught to read, and loved every day. Nothing can make that fake."

He nodded but did not look convinced.

That night, E-2 appeared outside Grace's hotel window on the third floor.

He stood on the narrow ledge in the rain.

Grace opened the window and pulled him inside.

The boy was freezing. A tracking collar circled his neck.

He looked at Ethan and spoke his first words.

Eli's arrival changed the atmosphere of every room. Security guards who had faced gunfire looked uncertain around the silent child. He studied exits, counted cameras, and sat where no one could approach from behind. Grace recognized survival habits in miniature. She had lived with similar vigilance after running from Adrian, but Eli had never known a time before fear.

Ethan tried jokes, games, and endless questions. Eli responded with small observations: which guard favored his left knee, which window lock was weaker, which hallway camera had a blind angle. The twins shared a face, but the Society had given them different childhoods and expected the difference to become hatred.

"She is coming for our mother."

May you like

Grace asked which mother.

E-2 pointed at her.
