Chapter 8 - The Truth Behind the Locked Door

Police found Tessa that evening.

She was staying in a women’s shelter under a false name in the coastal town of Grayhaven.

She had collapsed from exhaustion shortly after arriving, and shelter staff had taken her to a clinic without knowing police were searching for her.

Detective Santos called Bear from the hospital.

“She is alive,” Santos said.

Bear had to sit down.

Emma slept in the crib beside him.

“Can I speak to her?”

“She is frightened. She believes Cole may still have access to your phone records.”

“He’s in custody.”

“We told her.”

There was a pause.

“She asked whether the baby was safe.”

Bear closed his eyes.

“Tell her Emma is with me.”

An hour later, a video call arrived on Claire’s tablet.

Bear sat in a private hospital room with Emma in his arms.

The screen illuminated.

Tessa appeared.

She was thinner than Bear remembered, with dark circles beneath her eyes and hair cut unevenly to her shoulders. Yet she was unmistakably his daughter.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Three years stood between them.

So did the final words Bear had shouted at the door.

Tessa looked down at Emma.

“You found her.”

Bear nodded.

“She found me.”

“Is she all right?”

“She’s strong.”

Tessa’s lips trembled.

“She likes being rocked slowly.”

“I know.”

“And she gets angry when the blanket touches her chin.”

“I know that too.”

Tessa laughed once through her tears.

Bear’s chest tightened.

“I am sorry,” he said.

She became still.

“I should never have told you not to come home. I should have followed you. I should have said I loved you instead of pretending anger could protect you.”

Tessa looked away from the screen.

“I thought you hated me.”

“Never.”

“Cole said you were relieved I was gone.”

“He lied.”

“I know that now.”

Bear adjusted Emma against his chest.

“The room is still yours.”

Tessa covered her mouth.

“I don’t know how to come back.”

“You don’t have to know. You only have to take the first step.”

“What if I’m not the person you remember?”

“Then I’ll learn who you are now.”

Tessa began crying.

Bear wanted to reach through the screen, but all he could do was hold Emma closer.

“Dad,” she whispered, “can I still come home?”

Bear answered the question he had rehearsed every night for three years.

“You never stopped having one.”

Two days later, Tessa returned to Riverside under police protection.

Bear waited outside the NICU with Emma.

When the elevator doors opened, Tessa stood beside Detective Santos.

Bear did not rush toward her.

He allowed Tessa to choose the distance.

She crossed the corridor slowly.

Then she placed both arms around him.

Bear held his daughter with one arm and his granddaughter with the other.

The NICU corridor became silent again.

This time, no one was shocked.

They were witnessing a family become whole.
