Chapter 6 - Tessa’s Last Message
Claire discovered the hidden compartment by accident.
The bottom panel of Sunny’s carrier shifted when she lifted it from the storage room. Beneath the fabric was a small brass key taped beside a train-station locker number.
Locker 214.
Detective Santos obtained permission to search it.
Bear waited at Riverside while police traveled to the station. He held Sunny and tried not to imagine what might be found.
Three hours later, Santos returned carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was a prepaid phone, several financial documents, and a handwritten letter addressed to Bear.
His hands trembled as he opened it.
Dad,
I don’t know whether I will be able to give this to you myself.
I should have called sooner. I tried many times, but every time I heard your voicemail, I remembered the last thing you said to me. Cole told me you hated me for choosing him. I wanted to believe he was lying, but I was ashamed that you had been right.
Bear stopped reading.
The words blurred.
Claire placed a hand on his shoulder.
He continued.
Cole did not become cruel all at once. He took small things first. My phone passwords. My bank access. My friendships. Then he took the truth and replaced it with whatever version kept me frightened.
When I learned I was pregnant, I knew I had to leave. He said the baby would give him control of Mom’s trust. He had already prepared documents declaring me incapable of managing money.
I copied everything I could.
If something happens to me, please protect my daughter.
I named her Emily Tessa Ransom in the hospital paperwork, but Cole changed the forms before they were submitted. I want her called Emma.
I am sorry I stayed away.
I am sorry I believed you stopped loving me.
Bear pressed the letter against his forehead.
A sound escaped him that Claire had never heard from another human being. It was not quite a sob and not quite a cry. It was the sound of years of regret breaking open at once.
“There’s more,” Detective Santos said gently.
The prepaid phone contained recordings.
In one, Cole ordered Tessa to sign documents transferring control of the trust.
In another, he threatened to declare her unstable and take the baby after birth.
A final video showed Tessa sitting in a dim room with Sunny in her arms.
She looked exhausted but clear-minded.
“If anyone finds this,” Tessa said, “Cole Reed must not be allowed to raise my daughter. My father, Earl Ransom, is not dangerous. He is the safest person I have ever known.”
Bear covered his mouth.
Tessa looked directly into the camera.
“Dad, I know you told me not to expect you to rescue me. But I understand now that you were scared. I was scared too. I don’t need rescuing anymore. I only need you to do what you have always done.”
She looked down at the baby.
“Stand between her and whatever is coming.”
The video ended.
Bear sat motionless.
Then Detective Santos revealed the final discovery.
A transit employee remembered seeing Tessa board a bus after leaving Sunny at Riverside.
The bus traveled north toward a small coastal town.
