Chapter 7 - The Courtroom Full of Leather
The emergency custody hearing took place the next morning.
Cole arrived in a tailored suit with three lawyers.
Bear arrived wearing a clean white shirt beneath his leather vest.
Behind him sat twenty-seven members of the Iron Harbor Riders.
They filled two courtroom rows in complete silence.
Some had gray beards and tattooed arms. Others were teachers, mechanics, paramedics, and veterans. One was a retired judge. Another managed a local grocery store.
Every one of them had come to testify about Bear.
Cole’s lead attorney attempted to use Bear’s old conviction against him.
“Mr. Ransom has a documented history of violence.”
The retired judge, Samuel Price, testified first.
“I presided over the later review of that case,” Samuel said. “Mr. Ransom intervened to protect a minor. The original prosecution failed to present the full context.”
Claire testified about Bear’s behavior at the hospital.
“He held the baby for twelve hours,” she said. “He followed every instruction, asked permission before every movement, and placed her needs above his own. I have seen experienced parents show less patience.”
Denise presented the home-inspection report.
She confirmed that Bear’s residence was safe, stable, and prepared for an infant. She also revealed that he had already enrolled in emergency parenting classes and arranged for a licensed pediatric nurse to assist during the first weeks.
Cole’s attorney objected.
“He arranged all of this after learning about the trust.”
Bear looked at the judge.
“I spent twelve hours holding Emma before I knew a trust existed.”
It was the first time he used the baby’s real name in court.
The judge noticed.
“Why are you calling her Emma?”
Bear handed over Tessa’s letter.
Cole’s face turned pale.
His attorney demanded that the evidence be excluded, but the judge allowed Detective Santos to describe the ongoing investigation.
The recordings had been authenticated.
Financial documents showed that Cole had attempted to create a guardianship structure giving himself control over Tessa’s assets.
A doctor’s signature on one document appeared to be forged.
Cole rose abruptly.
“This is absurd. My wife is mentally ill.”
Bear stood too.
“No. She was isolated.”
“She stole my daughter.”
“She protected her.”
Cole pointed at Bear.
“You drove her away.”
The accusation struck harder because it contained part of the truth.
Bear did not deny it.
“I said something unforgivable because I was afraid,” he said. “I have lived with it every day. But my failure does not erase what you did to her.”
The judge called for order.
After reviewing the evidence, she denied Cole’s request for immediate custody.
Temporary guardianship of Emma was granted to Bear under supervision while the investigation continued.
A sheriff’s deputy approached Cole before he could leave.
Cole was not arrested for harming Tessa. There was not yet enough evidence.
He was arrested for financial fraud, document forgery, and violating a previous court order involving another former partner.
As the deputy placed him in handcuffs, Cole looked back at Bear.
“This isn’t over.”
Bear remained calm.
“For you, it is only beginning.”
Outside the courtroom, the Iron Harbor Riders surrounded Bear.
No one cheered.
No one celebrated while Tessa remained missing.
Mack handed him the carrier.
Emma opened her eyes.

This time, he intended to make the promise true.
