Chapter 13 - The Room That Did Not Exist

Arthur Vale designed the hotel before expanding Aurelia Gallery beneath it.
The original blueprints showed twenty-three floors.
The elevators displayed twenty-two.
According to hotel records, the missing level contained mechanical equipment and sealed service areas.
According to Adrian, no employee had entered it in fifteen years.
Marcus accessed the service elevator using Arthur’s archive code.
The elevator rose past the twenty-second floor and stopped between levels.
When the doors opened, darkness waited beyond them.
Nora stepped into a narrow corridor lined with dust-covered mirrors.
The hidden floor had once been a private residential suite. Furniture remained beneath white sheets. Paintings had been removed, leaving pale rectangles across the walls.
At the end of the corridor was a nursery.
Faded stars covered the ceiling.
A wooden crib stood beside the window.
Claire stopped in the doorway.
“This is impossible.”
“What?”
She approached the crib.
“It’s the same model Evelyn used in our apartment.”
Inside the hollow canopy support, they found a velvet case.
Nora’s hands shook as she opened it.
The case was empty.
A recent fingerprint marked the dust beside it.
Someone had found the hiding place before them.
Mateo searched the room while Marcus checked the corridor.
Adrian opened a cabinet filled with baby clothes, photographs, and sealed legal documents.
The name on the nursery records was not Nora Hale.
It was Nora Vale.
A birth certificate identified Daniel Vale as her father.
The document had been signed by Daniel, Evelyn, and Arthur.
Lydia’s signature appeared beneath them as a witness.
“She knew,” Nora said.
Adrian examined the papers.
“Arthur created a private trust for you.”
Claire sat beside the crib.
“Evelyn never told me.”
“She may have planned to after clearing her name.”
Nora found a photograph inside the cabinet.
Evelyn held her as a baby while Daniel stood behind them. Arthur sat nearby, smiling.
Lydia appeared in the mirror at the edge of the image.
She was watching the family from the doorway.
Nora understood the hatred in her eyes.
Daniel had been married to Lydia when Nora was born.
The truth did not excuse Lydia’s crimes, but it explained why Nora’s existence threatened more than money.
Nora represented the life Daniel had hidden from his wife.
Marcus called from the corridor.
He had found fresh footprints leading to a private stairwell.
They followed the prints down two levels to an abandoned suite registered under Meridian Holdings.
The room had been cleaned recently.
A burner phone lay on the desk.
Its call history showed repeated contact with Simon Grant, Lydia Cross, and an unknown international number.
The final outgoing call had been placed less than an hour earlier.
Mateo accessed the text messages.
Grant had sent a photograph of the microfilm ledger.
The recipient replied:
Destroy the capsule. The necklace is already with the heir.
Nora stared at the message.
“If the necklace is with me, why haven’t I seen it?”
Claire looked toward the silver locket.
“The original may not be the necklace we think it is.”
Adrian shook his head.
“The Celestine design has always been documented.”
“By Aurelia,” Claire said. “By the same people who authenticated a replica for eighteen years.”
Nora removed the locket and placed it on the desk.
The silver rose on the front contained a tiny blue center stone.
Too small to be the famous Celestine.
Unless the famous stone had been cut around something else.
Mateo examined it beneath a portable scanner.
The device detected a cavity inside.
Nora inserted the brass key into the hidden mechanism.
The silver rose opened.
Inside was a crystal capsule containing a thin blue fragment and a rolled strip of microfilm.
The locket had carried part of the original Celestine all along.
Nora unrolled the microfilm beneath the hotel lamp.
Most of the names had faded.
One remained clear.
ADRIAN COLE - FINAL AUTHORIZATION.
Everyone turned toward Adrian.
He stared at the record.
“I never authorized a substitution.”
Marcus moved between him and the door.
Adrian raised his hands.
“That signature is forged.”
Nora wanted to believe him.
Then Mateo picked up the burner phone.

A new message had arrived from the unknown number.
Adrian is lying. Ask him what he did to Evelyn on the bridge.
