Chapter 11 - The Promise Evelyn Made Camille Keep

The press conference dissolved into chaos.
Reporters shouted questions. Board members demanded explanations. Police officers moved toward Camille while Lydia’s attorney attempted to end the broadcast.
Nora heard none of it clearly.
Your mother asked me to frame you.
She pushed through the crowd.
Camille did not resist when Nora grabbed her arm.
“Why would she do that?”
“To force the gallery to open the Celestine case in front of witnesses.”
“My mother vanished eighteen years ago.”
Camille looked at her with exhausted sadness.
“The instruction was eighteen years old.”
Before Evelyn disappeared, she created the Witness Necklace and gave it to Camille. She told her to protect it until two conditions were met.
Arthur Vale had to be dead.
And Nora had to enter Aurelia Gallery carrying the locket.
“When both happened,” Camille said, “I was supposed to place the Witness near you and make certain the central case was opened publicly.”
“You accused me of stealing.”
“Lydia turned Evelyn’s plan into something crueler.”
Camille had contacted Lydia after the scholarship activated. She pretended she wanted money in exchange for the Witness Necklace.
Lydia ordered her to plant it in Nora’s bag.
Camille agreed because it allowed Evelyn’s original plan to proceed.
“You could have warned me,” Nora said.
“If Lydia believed you were prepared, she would have canceled the interview and moved the necklace inside the case.”
“The necklace was already fake.”
“But Lydia did not know that Adrian had begun testing it.”
Adrian joined them near the board table.
“What was the purpose of opening the case?”
Camille looked toward the replica Marcus had removed.
“Evelyn hid a second message inside the security mount.”
Marcus searched the velvet platform.
Beneath the necklace stand was a metal plate carrying the inventory serial number. The plate appeared solid, but the brass key from Nora’s locket fit a concealed opening underneath.
Nora turned it.
A narrow compartment released from the base.
Inside was a sealed letter bearing Arthur Vale’s signature.
Adrian opened it before the cameras.
To the person who carries Evelyn’s locket,
If this letter has been found, then the necklace inside my gallery has finally been exposed as a replica.
Evelyn did not steal the Celestine Diamond.
She discovered that Lydia Mercer Cross and an unidentified Crownfire member had been using authorized replicas to conceal the removal of jewels from private collections.
I failed to defend Evelyn when it mattered.
This letter is my formal declaration that every accusation made against her was unsupported, manipulated, and promoted by individuals with financial interests in her silence.
The remaining evidence is contained within the original Celestine.
Arthur Vale
The room remained silent after Adrian finished.
Nora’s throat tightened.
It was not enough to bring her mother back.
But it was enough to destroy the lie that had defined her.
Lydia walked toward the exit.
Two officers blocked her path.
“You are not under arrest,” one said, “but you need to remain available for questioning.”
Lydia turned toward Camille.
“You think Arthur’s letter protects you?”
“No.”
“You admitted planting the necklace.”
“I did.”
“You kidnapped the boy.”
“I kept him away from Grant.”
“You participated in a conspiracy.”
Camille’s voice remained steady.
“So did you.”
Lydia smiled.
“You still believe Evelyn trusted you.”
Camille went pale.
Nora noticed.
“What does she mean?”
Lydia’s attorney pulled her away before she answered.
Police escorted Camille into a private interview room.
Adrian read Arthur’s letter again for the reporters. The board voted to suspend Lydia from the foundation and authorize an independent investigation.
Nora’s phone filled with notifications.
Headlines changed rapidly.
New Evidence Clears Evelyn Hale in Historic Celestine Case.
Aurelia Chair Suspended After Teen Framed During Scholarship Interview.
Arthur Vale Letter Accuses Lydia Cross of Concealing Jewelry Scheme.
For the first time, the public story carried Nora’s innocence.
It should have felt like victory.
Instead, she kept thinking about Lydia’s last words to Camille.
You still believe Evelyn trusted you.
Mateo approached carrying the black notebook.
“I found something on the page Adrian thought was blank.”
Under infrared light, Evelyn had written a final sentence.
The fourth member betrayed us. Camille must never learn what I placed inside the original stone.
Nora looked toward the interview room.
Camille sat beyond the glass, speaking to detectives.
If Camille was the fourth member, Evelyn had not trusted her.
If she was not, then someone else from Crownfire was still hidden.
Nora turned to Mateo.
“Who else knew how to make the replicas?”
Before he could answer, every phone in the gallery received the same emergency alert.
Simon Grant had been found dead inside a parked car near the river.
The empty microfilm capsule rested on the seat beside him.
