Chapter 12 - The Heir No One Had Mentioned

The police sealed Aurelia Gallery.

Lydia was detained for questioning after investigators found her lipstick brand inside Grant’s car, but she insisted the evidence had been planted.

Nora believed her.

Lydia was manipulative, ruthless, and willing to frame a teenager. But writing a dramatic message across a dead man’s windshield felt less like Lydia and more like someone who wanted the investigation pointed toward her.

Grant’s death was reported as suspicious and potentially connected to internal injuries from the warehouse escape. Police released no further details.

The word heir became the center of every conversation.

Arthur Vale had one acknowledged son, Daniel, who died in a plane crash twelve years earlier without children. Lydia, Daniel’s widow, inherited control of several trusts but did not inherit the gallery itself.

The gallery belonged to the Aurelia Preservation Foundation.

“What heir?” Nora asked Adrian.

They sat inside the sealed archive beneath the gallery. Marcus guarded the elevator while Mateo digitized Evelyn’s notebook.

Adrian opened the Vale family records.

“Arthur had no other acknowledged children.”

“Acknowledged?”

“There were rumors before his marriage. None were proven.”

Claire examined the Crownfire register.

“The message may not refer to Arthur’s heir.”

“Then whose?” Nora asked.

“Evelyn’s.”

Nora looked up.

“I’m her only child.”

Claire hesitated.

Nora immediately understood.

“What else haven’t you told me?”

“Your father.”

“You said he left before I was born.”

“He did.”

“Who was he?”

“Evelyn refused to tell me.”

Nora laughed once, without humor.

“Of course she did.”

Claire reached for her hand, but Nora pulled away.

Adrian placed an old employee photograph on the table.

Evelyn stood beside Arthur and Daniel Vale at a charity exhibition. Daniel was tall, dark-haired, and smiling toward Evelyn instead of the camera.

Nora stared at his face.

The shape of his eyes looked familiar.

Adrian spoke carefully.

“Arthur suspected Daniel was your father.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“And Lydia?”

“She knew Evelyn and Daniel were close.”

Nora felt suddenly cold.

“If Daniel was my father, then Lydia was…”

“His wife,” Adrian said.

The accusation in the gallery took on a new meaning.

Lydia had not targeted a random scholarship applicant.

She had targeted the possible daughter of her late husband.

“And the heir?” Nora asked.

“If Daniel was your father, you might have a claim to assets held in the Vale family trust.”

“I don’t want their money.”

“This is not only about money. Arthur’s letter said the remaining evidence was inside the original Celestine. The message on Grant’s car said the original belongs to the heir.”

Mateo turned his laptop around.

He had found an encrypted file hidden inside the scanned notebook.

The password was six characters.

Nora tried Evelyn.

Incorrect.

She tried Daniel.

Incorrect.

Claire suggested Celestine.

Incorrect.

Nora looked at the locket.

The two empty photograph spaces had always bothered her.

She entered NORA18.

The file opened.

It contained a single audio recording.

At first, only static played.

Then Evelyn’s voice filled the archive.

Nora had no memory of her mother’s voice.

Hearing it for the first time made the room disappear.

“If Nora is listening to this,” Evelyn said, “then Arthur’s plan has failed, Lydia has found the Witness, and the original Celestine is still missing.”

Nora covered her mouth.

Evelyn continued.

“The necklace contains records of every Crownfire substitution authorized through Meridian Holdings. Those records can clear my name, but they can also destroy people who will do anything to remain protected.”

A pause followed.

“I gave the original to the only person I believed Lydia would never suspect.”

Another burst of static swallowed several words.

Then Evelyn said, “The heir must choose whether to expose the truth or preserve the family.”

The recording ended.

Mateo replayed the damaged section.

Beneath the static, a faint word could be heard.

Hotel.

Adrian looked toward the ceiling.

May you like

The Vale Hotel rose above them.

“The original Celestine never left the building,” he said.
