Chapter 8 - Brooke’s Last Move

The evidence against Brooke grew stronger, and prosecutors prepared charges related to forgery, unlawful access to medical information, identity fraud, and conspiracy.

Aaron Pike accepted a cooperation agreement.

He admitted that Brooke had paid him to alter Emma’s records.

Facing the destruction of her reputation and career, Brooke made one final attempt to regain control.

She contacted a celebrity news website and offered them a story.

According to Brooke’s version, Emma had hidden a pregnancy from Vincent, disappeared intentionally, and then used the baby to destroy Brooke’s relationship with him.

The website prepared to publish the allegations.

Vincent learned of the story hours before release.

His public relations team advised him to remain silent.

“Any statement could create more attention,” one executive said. “We can challenge the story later.”

Vincent looked through the glass wall of the conference room.

This was the kind of advice he had followed throughout his career.

Protect the company.

Avoid emotional statements.

Control the damage.

That thinking had allowed Brooke to isolate Emma.

“No,” Vincent said. “We respond now.”

He recorded a public statement in his office.

He did not expose Emma’s private medical details. He did not mention Samuel’s condition. Instead, he accepted responsibility.

Emma Carter did not deceive me, he said. She was the victim of a deliberate campaign involving forged communications and altered records. I failed to trust her when she deserved my trust. Any suggestion that she used her child for personal advantage is false. I will cooperate fully with law enforcement and protect her privacy.

The statement spread quickly.

The celebrity website cancelled its article after receiving documents from Vincent’s attorneys.

Brooke’s final weapon disappeared.

That evening, she drove to the Hale estate and demanded to see him.

Vincent agreed to meet her in the front hall while security remained nearby.

Brooke entered wearing the same blue dress she had worn at the hospital.

“You destroyed me,” she said.

Vincent stood near the fireplace.

“You destroyed yourself.”

“I did everything because I loved you.”

“That wasn’t love.”

“You would have married me.”

“No.”

“You came to events with me. You let people believe we were together.”

“I was lonely, confused, and ashamed. I used your attention to avoid facing what I had done to Emma. That was wrong, but it was never love.”

Brooke’s face twisted with anger.

“She made you weak.”

“She made me honest.”

“You think she’ll take you back?”

“This is not about winning her back.”

“Then what was your statement? A performance?”

“It was the truth.”

Brooke moved closer.

“I know you better than she does.”

Vincent shook his head.

“You knew my habits. You knew my schedule and my fears. Emma knew the person I wanted to become.”

For a moment, Brooke appeared to shrink beneath the weight of those words.

Then she reached into her bag.

Security immediately moved forward.

She removed only a small silver key.

It belonged to the penthouse.

Vincent had given it to her months earlier.

Brooke placed it on the table.

“When this is over, you’ll remember that I was the one who stayed.”

Vincent looked at the key.

“No. I’ll remember that you were the reason she had to run.”

Brooke was escorted outside.

Police arrested her the following morning after prosecutors approved the charges.

As she was led away, the photographers waiting outside called her name.
