THE NAME THAT WAS ERASED / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Signature

Brooke had served on the fundraising committee at St. Mercy Hospital for two years.

She knew administrators, department heads, and several members of the hospital board. She used those connections carefully.

First, she contacted a temporary records clerk named Aaron Pike.

Aaron had significant debts and had recently received a warning for accessing patient information without authorization.

Brooke invited him to meet at a quiet café.

“I need a clerical error corrected,” she said.

Aaron studied the paper she placed in front of him.

It was an emergency contact amendment form carrying Emma’s details.

Vincent’s name had been crossed out and replaced with Lena’s.

“I can’t change this without the patient’s authorization.”

Brooke slid an envelope across the table.

“You’re not creating false medical information. You’re updating a phone number.”

Aaron did not touch the envelope.

“Why can’t she do it herself?”

“She is leaving an abusive relationship.”

The lie came easily.

Brooke lowered her voice.

“The man listed there has powerful connections. If the hospital calls him, he may find her.”

Aaron looked again at the form.

Brooke had practiced Emma’s signature for days.

She had copied it from consulting agreements stored at Hale Development.

The forged signature was almost perfect.

Aaron took the envelope.

Within twenty-four hours, Vincent’s name disappeared from the hospital copied it from consulting agreements stored at Hale Development.

The forged signature was almost perfect.

Aaron took the envelope.

Within system.

Brooke then obtained Emma’s appointment schedule.

She began sending anonymous messages warning Emma that Vincent intended to seek full custody once the baby was born.

He has attorneys preparing the case.

He will say you are unstable.

He knows where you live.

Emma showed the messages to Lena.

“You need to report this,” Lena said.

“To whom? The messages come from different numbers.”

“Vincent might not know anything about them.”

Emma wanted to believe that.

But fear was stronger than hope.

She remembered his cold expression when he asked about Daniel. She remembered the recording outside the Hale estate.

Brooke’s plan depended on making Emma too frightened to investigate and Vincent too wounded to keep searching.

For several months, it worked.

Vincent threw himself into his company.

Brooke remained constantly at his side, presenting herself as the one person he could trust.

She organized meetings, handled reporters, and helped resolve the contractor scandal.

The scandal itself had also been exaggerated by Brooke. She had encouraged the former contractor to contact the press, creating the crisis that prevented Vincent from speaking to Emma.

By the time the situation ended, Brooke had made herself indispensable.

One evening, she brought dinner to Vincent’s office.

“You can’t keep punishing yourself,” she told him.

“I should have gone after Emma.”

“She chose to leave.”

“I accused her without proof.”

“You saw the photographs.”

“I saw what someone wanted me to see.”

Brooke’s hand paused over the wine bottle.

“What does that mean?”

Vincent looked at her.

“It means I called Daniel Mercer.”

Brooke’s heartbeat quickened.

“And?”

“He said Emma attended the conference with thirty other consultants.”

“He could be protecting her.”

“He sent me the conference records.”

Brooke forced herself to remain calm.

Vincent continued.

“He also said a photographer followed them for most of the morning.”

“That’s strange.”

“Yes,” Vincent said. “It is.”

For the first time, Brooke understood that her plan was beginning to crack.

She needed to give Vincent a reason to stop looking backward.

Two weeks later, she announced that she was leaving Hale Development.

Vincent seemed surprised.

“I thought it might be healthier,” she said. “People are starting to assume there’s something between us.”

“Is there?”

Brooke looked into his eyes.

“There could be.”

Vincent should have refused.

Instead, he thought about the empty penthouse and the woman he believed had abandoned him.

He allowed Brooke to kiss him.

It was not love.

But to Brooke, it was victory.
