Chapter 1 - The Woman at the Lake

Eight months earlier, Vincent Hale believed he understood the direction of his life.

At thirty-five, he was the chief executive of Hale Development, a Chicago construction company founded by his grandfather. He owned a penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan, traveled in private cars, and appeared in business magazines beside headlines praising his discipline.

Yet the most important part of his life had nothing to do with money.

It was Emma.

Emma Carter worked as an architectural preservation consultant. She cared more about old brickwork and forgotten buildings than expensive restaurants or social status.

They met during a restoration project in Milwaukee.

Vincent had arrived expecting another consultant who would agree with everything he said. Instead, Emma challenged his plan to demolish part of a historic train station.

“You can build something new without destroying everything that came before it,” she told him.

Vincent had been annoyed.

Then he became fascinated.

For three years, they built a relationship that surprised everyone around them. Vincent was controlled and cautious. Emma was warm, independent, and unafraid to tell him when he was wrong.

She moved into his penthouse, though she refused to let him pay off her student loans.

“I love you,” she said, “but I’m not becoming one of your business acquisitions.”

He laughed whenever she said it, but he secretly respected her more for it.

Their future seemed certain until Brooke Lawson returned to Chicago.

Brooke had known Vincent since childhood. Their parents belonged to the same social circles, and for years everyone assumed they would eventually marry.

They never did.

Vincent had always considered Brooke a friend. She was charming, polished, and skilled at making herself useful. When Hale Development faced a public relations crisis, Brooke offered to manage the company’s communications.

Emma disliked her almost immediately.

“She watches you like she’s waiting for something,” Emma said one evening.

Vincent dismissed the concern.

“She’s known me for twenty years.”

“That doesn’t mean you know her.”

He kissed Emma’s forehead and promised there was nothing to worry about.

Two weeks later, Emma discovered she was pregnant.

She found out alone in the bathroom of the penthouse while Vincent was attending a conference in New York.

For several minutes, she sat on the floor holding the test in both hands.

She was frightened, but beneath the fear was a happiness so powerful it left her shaking.

Emma planned to tell Vincent when he returned.

She purchased a small wooden box and placed the test inside with a note.

Our greatest project begins now.

The night before Vincent’s return, Brooke appeared at the penthouse.

She claimed Vincent had asked her to collect several contracts from his office.

Emma let her inside.

While Emma prepared coffee, Brooke noticed the wooden box on the dining table.

“What is it?” she asked.

“A surprise for Vincent.”

Brooke smiled, but her eyes remained fixed on the box.

Later, while Emma answered a phone call on the balcony, Brooke opened it.

She stared at the pregnancy test and the handwritten note.

When Emma returned, the box appeared untouched.

Brooke finished her coffee and left with the contracts.

That night, she sat in her car outside the building for nearly an hour.

She had spent years believing Vincent would eventually realize she was the woman meant for him.

Now Emma was carrying his child.

Brooke understood that affection would no longer be enough.

If she wanted Vincent, she would have to remove Emma from his life completely.
