Chapter 13 - the day mia remembered)

Children do not tell stories the way adults do.
They give fragments.
A word at breakfast.
A gesture during bath time.
A fear nobody understands.
Rebecca stopped asking Mia direct questions because specialists warned her not to influence memory.
Instead she watched.
One afternoon Mia played with dolls.
She placed one doll on the floor.
Another doll stood above it.
"Sleep," Mia said.
Rebecca's chest tightened.
Mia picked up a toy cup.
"Juice."
Then she pointed to the doll on the floor.
"Daddy juice."
Rebecca did not react.
She called the child psychologist afterward.
Over several sessions, Mia revealed pieces.
Daniel sometimes gave her "special juice."
He took her to a "bright room."
A lady put a "sticker" on her chest.
Mia cried.
Daniel told her Mommy would be angry if she told.
Then Mia said something new.
"Blue house."
Rebecca asked nothing.
The psychologist gently explored the phrase over days.
Mia associated the blue house with Daniel.
And a woman.
Not Patricia.
A "lady with glasses."
Police reviewed Daniel's known properties.
No blue house.
Claire remembered a lake rental Daniel used during their marriage.
It had been sold.
New owners painted it blue.
Police searched the property history.
The current owner confirmed someone had broken into the vacant guest cottage several times.
Security cameras captured Daniel six months earlier.
Inside the cottage, investigators found medical supplies.
Children's cups.
Disposable gloves.
Copies of Rebecca's signature.
And a laptop hidden beneath floorboards.
The laptop was the break they needed.
Daniel believed he had wiped it.
He had not.
Forensic recovery found hundreds of files.
Draft custody petitions.
Edited photographs.
Fake medical documents.
Financial spreadsheets calculating the trust.
Emails between Daniel and Patricia.
Messages to Rachel.
A document titled FINAL SEQUENCE.
Rebecca was not allowed to read it immediately.
Wells summarized.
Daniel planned five stages.
Stage one.
Create repeated minor injuries.
Stage two.
Establish medical neglect.
Stage three.
Use forged complaints to trigger child protective investigation.
Stage four.
Adopt Mia while portraying himself as stable caretaker.
Stage five.
Remove Adam through criminal allegations.
Then gain control of the trust.
But there was a sixth folder.
Not in the plan.
Created recently.
AFTER REBECCA KNOWS.
Inside were searches about foreign travel.
Fake passports.
Private airfields.
Countries without easy extradition.
Daniel had abandoned the original scheme after exposure.
Now he wanted escape.
With money if possible.
Without if necessary.
And possibly with Mia.
Police issued alerts at airports and borders.
Rebecca stopped leaving safe locations with Mia.
Then one email changed everything.
Recovered correspondence showed Daniel had booked a charter flight under another name.
Departure Saturday.
Location private.
Passenger count two.
Rebecca looked at Wells.
"Two."
He nodded.
Daniel intended to take Mia.
The question was how.
Every person around Mia was guarded.
Daniel could not approach.
Unless someone inside helped him.
Rebecca suddenly thought of Patricia.
In jail.
No.
Rachel.
Also detained.
Claire.
Cleared.
Adam.
Protected.
Sophie.
No.
Then she remembered the daycare.
Ms. Connie.
Daniel had spent months gaining her trust.
Police called.
Connie answered.
She sounded confused.
Then frightened.
Daniel had contacted her two days earlier.
He told her Rebecca was having a psychological breakdown.
He claimed police had privately cleared him.
He said Mia might be removed illegally.
Connie did not believe him.
But Daniel asked one strange question.
"Is the old field trip emergency gate still unlocked?"
Connie said no.
Then she remembered.
The gate was not at the daycare.
It was at the county children's museum where the daycare had a scheduled Saturday family event.
Tomorrow.
Rebecca went cold.
Daniel expected Mia to attend.
The event had been on the calendar for months.
He did not know Rebecca had stopped normal activities.
Police set a trap.
Rebecca objected.
Then agreed.
Not because she wanted revenge.
Because Daniel would keep running until he believed Mia was within reach.
Saturday morning, the museum opened at nine.
Plainclothes officers filled the building.
Connie arrived.
Several families attended normally.
Rebecca stayed in a secured observation room.
Mia was nowhere near the public floor.
At ten twenty three, a man entered wearing a baseball cap.
Not Daniel.
He walked toward the emergency gate.
Police detained him.
He was a rideshare driver paid cash to pick up "a child and her father."
Daniel was nearby.
At ten thirty one, traffic camera recognition found a stolen vehicle two blocks away.
Police moved.
The vehicle was empty.
Then Rebecca's phone rang.
Daniel.
She answered.
His voice was calm.
"You finally learned."
"Learned what?"
"How to set traps."
Rebecca looked through the one way glass.
"Where are you?"
"Close enough."
"You're not getting Mia."
Daniel laughed softly.
"I don't need to."
Rebecca froze.
"What?"
"I needed you away from home."
The line disconnected.
Rebecca stared at Wells.
Then understood.
Their house.
Daniel had returned for something.
Police raced there.
Daniel was inside the basement.
When officers entered, he ran upstairs.
Through the kitchen.
Out the front door.
A cruiser blocked him.
He turned.
Another officer behind.
Daniel stopped on the lawn.
For the first time in months, nowhere remained.
He raised his hands.
May you like
Then looked directly toward the security camera mounted above the porch.
And smiled.
