THE NAME DANIEL TRIED TO ERASE / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - claire's lie)

Claire watched the footage three times.

"That's not me."

It looked exactly like her.

Same hair.

Same build.

Same face.

But Claire insisted she had never been there.

Police compared the timestamp with bookstore security footage.

Claire was working ninety miles away.

Impossible.

Then Owen spoke.

"That's Aunt Rachel."

Claire turned.

"What?"

Owen looked shaken.

"Dad introduced me to her online."

Rebecca's blood chilled.

Rachel.

The half sister Daniel invented.

Except Rachel existed.

Claire closed her eyes.

"Rachel Bennett."

Patricia's niece.

Daniel's cousin.

They looked remarkably alike.

Claire had met her once twenty years earlier.

Rachel had disappeared from the family after marrying.

Patricia never mentioned her.

Police found Rachel living under another surname.

She was arrested at her home.

At first she denied everything.

Then investigators showed the notary footage.

She confessed.

Daniel paid her twenty thousand dollars to impersonate Sophie.

He told her Rebecca was abusing Mia and that the forged statement would help save the child.

Rachel claimed she believed him.

Wells did not.

Bank records showed multiple payments from Daniel over six months.

She had impersonated more than Sophie.

She created false pharmacy records.

She posed as Rebecca during telephone consultations.

She sent anonymous complaints to daycare.

She even called Adam's employer pretending to be a social worker.

Daniel had built an entire invisible network around Rebecca.

Not a grand conspiracy.

Just lies distributed among people who each knew only a piece.

That was how he avoided exposure.

No one besides Patricia knew the whole plan.

Perhaps not even Patricia.

Rachel gave police Daniel's emergency email address.

They traced the latest login.

A motel near St. Catherine Medical Center.

Police arrived forty minutes too late.

Room empty.

But Daniel left something behind.

A map of the hospital.

A circle around the records department.

He was going back.

Lena received police protection.

The hospital increased security.

Rebecca did not understand.

"Why risk going there?"

Wells answered, "Because the physical chart is the one piece he can't rewrite."

The electronic record preserved edits.

But the original paper intake form held signatures.

Patricia's number.

Daniel's handwriting.

And a note Lena had added after he fled.

Possible intentional exposure. Guardian evasive. Child identity uncertain.

That note could transform the case.

Daniel needed it gone.

The next night, a fire alarm sounded at St. Catherine.

Exactly like the first time.

Security locked down the records floor.

A man in maintenance clothing entered a service corridor.

Camera footage captured his face.

Daniel.

Officers chased him through the basement.

He escaped through a loading dock.

But this time he left blood on a broken window.

DNA confirmed identity.

More importantly, officers found his backpack.

Inside were zip ties.

Cash.

A passport under the name Daniel Bennett.

A photograph of Mia.

And a sealed syringe.

Rebecca stared at the evidence photograph.

"What was in it?"

Wells hesitated.

"Sedative."

"Was he going to use it on Lena?"

"We don't know."

Rebecca did.

Daniel did not simply want a file.

He wanted silence.

For the first time, Wells called him what Rebecca had feared.

"He's escalating."

The court issued a nationwide warrant.

News outlets published Daniel's photograph.

The story became public.

Rebecca hated that.

Strangers discussed Mia.

Comment sections invented details.

People called Rebecca stupid for not noticing sooner.

Others called her brave.

Neither felt true.

She was simply a mother who had trusted her husband.

One evening, after Mia finally slept, Adam sat with Rebecca on Sophie's porch.

"You couldn't have known."

Rebecca looked at him.

"I knew things were wrong."

"Knowing something is wrong isn't the same as knowing what."

Rebecca stared into the dark yard.

"I defended him."

"So did everyone."

"I married him."

Adam was silent.

Then he said, "And now you're the reason he's running."

Rebecca turned.

Adam continued.

"You found the wristband. You found the photos. You went to the nurse. You kept going."

Rebecca looked through the window at Mia.

For the first time since the ER, she allowed herself to believe they might survive this.

Then her phone rang.

Blocked number.

She answered.

Daniel whispered, "You always did need other people to tell you who to trust."

Rebecca stood.

"Where are you?"

He laughed.

"Ask Adam what he did the night your father died."

The line went dead.

Rebecca slowly looked at Adam.

May you like

His face had changed.

And that frightened her.
