Chapter 5 - The Genetic Evidence Daniel Wanted Destroyed

Daniel called again at four in the morning.

This time the federal team recorded every second.

Claire listened from behind a glass wall while Nathan and a negotiator sat beside the speakerphone.

Daniel’s voice sounded calm.

“I know you moved her.”

Nathan’s expression did not change.

“You ordered an attack on my sister.”

“I told Vanessa to delay Claire until I arrived.”

“She pressed a ceramic mug into an eight-month pregnancy.”

“That was not the plan.”

“You gave her instructions.”

“I gave her information.”

“What information?”

Silence.

Then Daniel sighed.

“You always wanted to believe Claire was stronger than she is.”

Nathan’s hand tightened around a pen.

“Where is Dr. Vale?”

“Safe.”

“Prove it.”

A woman’s weak voice came through the line.

“Nathan Bennett?”

Claire had never heard Miriam Vale speak, but the negotiator nodded.

“I am here,” Nathan said.

“Do not give him Claire.”

A blow sounded.

The woman cried out.

Daniel returned to the line.

“The trade happens tonight.”

“You know we cannot release a protected witness to you.”

“Claire comes willingly, or Miriam dies.”

Claire entered the room.

Nathan stood.

“You should not be here.”

She ignored him and leaned toward the phone.

“What do you want with my baby?”

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

“Claire.”

“Answer me.”

“You need to come home.”

“You tried to kill her.”

“No.”

“Vanessa said you taught her where to hurt me.”

“I was trying to prevent a premature delivery.”

Claire almost laughed.

“With violence?”

“You don’t understand the medical protocol.”

“What protocol?”

“The child is evidence.”

Nathan looked at the technicians.

They were tracing the call, but Daniel was routing it through multiple servers.

Claire forced her voice to remain steady.

“Whose child am I carrying?”

Daniel remained silent.

“Is she Elena’s?”

“Elena should never have contacted you.”

“Did you place my embryo in another woman?”

“You signed consent forms.”

“I signed forms for my own treatment.”

“You signed what was required.”

Claire closed her eyes.

The betrayal was larger than the affair, larger than the attack, larger even than the embryo switch.

Daniel had used her body as part of a transaction.

“Why?” she asked.

“Because our families were owed a child.”

“Our families?”

“Come to the exchange and I’ll explain.”

The call disconnected.

Technicians traced it to a motel outside Baltimore.

By the time marshals arrived, the room was empty.

They found blood on a chair, a broken pair of glasses belonging to Dr. Vale, and a laptop playing a recorded loop of Daniel’s side of the conversation.

He had never been there.

On the motel wall, someone had written a message in red marker.

CHECK THE FIRST ULTRASOUND.

Claire remembered the image immediately.

At seven weeks, the technician had printed three copies. One went into Claire’s pregnancy album. Margaret took the second. Daniel said the third was required for insurance.

Nathan asked a marshal to retrieve Claire’s album from her house.

The house had already been searched, but the album had appeared ordinary.

Two hours later, the ultrasound image lay beneath forensic lights.

At first it showed nothing unusual.

Then the technician peeled back the label.

Underneath was a micro-storage strip no wider than a fingernail.

It contained a video.

Dr. Vale appeared on the screen inside a laboratory.

“If this file is being viewed,” she said, “I failed to stop the transfer program.”

She held up a list of embryo codes.

“The Hawthorne network did not merely switch embryos. It created genetic claims that could be used to control inheritances, custody disputes, citizenship petitions, and corporate succession.”

Claire looked at Nathan.

“Corporate succession?”

He gestured for silence.

Dr. Vale continued.

“Certain clients paid to produce biological heirs without the knowledge of one or both genetic parents. Other clients paid to replace embryos so that children believed to belong to one family were actually connected to another.”

The video flickered.

“Daniel Bennett represented the investors. His mother, Margaret Bennett, recruited families with substantial trusts. Claire Bennett was designated both recipient and donor.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

The screen changed to display two files.

ELENA WARD EMBRYO E-W-6: TRANSFERRED TO C. BENNETT.

CLAIRE BENNETT EMBRYO C-B-3: TRANSFERRED TO SUBJECT R-17.

Claire could barely speak.

“Who is Subject R-17?”

Dr. Vale answered from the recording.

“The identity of Subject R-17 was removed from the central database by Daniel Bennett. I believe the child was born on February 11 of this year.”

A photograph appeared.

It showed a newborn’s hospital bracelet.

No name.

Only a number.

R-17-0211.

The video ended with Dr. Vale leaning close to the camera.

“The pregnant women are not the final targets. The children are. Whoever controls the birth certificates controls the evidence.”

The screen went black.

Nathan immediately ordered investigators to search national birth records for infants born on February 11 connected to Hawthorne physicians.

Claire sat frozen.

Somewhere, a six-month-old child might be biologically hers.

Daniel had known.

Margaret had known.

And while Claire decorated a nursery for the baby inside her, her first biological child might already have been living under another name.

Elena moved beside her.

“We’ll find the child.”

Claire turned.

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

Elena’s eyes filled with determination.

“But I know what it feels like to be told your child never existed.”

Nathan’s phone rang.

He answered, listened, and looked at Claire.

“We found a birth certificate connected to Subject R-17.”

Claire stood too quickly and gripped the table for support.

“Whose name is on it?”

May you like

Nathan lowered the phone.

“Vanessa Cole.”
