Chapter 1 - The Door Exploded Inward

The ceramic mug dug into Claire Bennett’s stomach as the closet door shuddered beneath another violent blow.
She had stopped begging.
Begging only made Vanessa Cole smile.
The narrow utility closet smelled of detergent, hot metal, and the sour chemical sting of spilled bleach. A washing machine rattled against one wall. Plastic bins lay overturned across the floor, spilling towels, extension cords, and cleaning supplies around Claire’s swollen feet.
Vanessa stood between her and the only exit.
Her carefully curled blond hair had fallen across her face. One sleeve of her expensive cream blouse was torn. There was blood on her wrist from where Claire had scratched her, but Vanessa seemed not to feel it.
She held the thick ceramic mug with both hands.
Its rough base pressed directly against the curve of Claire’s eight-month pregnant belly.
“You should have stayed away from him,” Vanessa whispered.
Claire struggled to breathe.
“My husband?”
Vanessa’s smile widened.
“He hasn’t been your husband for a long time.”
Heavy boots thundered down the hallway outside.
“Federal Marshals!” a man shouted. “Open the door!”
Vanessa’s confidence vanished.
Her eyes darted toward the broken handle, then toward the ceiling vent, as though she expected an escape route to appear.
Claire saw fear enter her face for the first time.
“Vanessa,” Claire said through clenched teeth. “It’s over.”
“No.”
The mistress pressed the mug harder.
Pain shot across Claire’s abdomen.
The baby moved sharply inside her.
Claire screamed.
The door frame cracked.
“Step away from her!”
Vanessa leaned closer, her breath hot against Claire’s cheek.
“He told me exactly where to press.”
Claire stared at her.
“What?”
BANG!
The utility door exploded inward.
Wood splintered across the washing machine.
Two U.S. Marshals rushed through the opening with weapons raised. Behind them came Claire’s older brother, Deputy Marshal Nathan Bennett, his face drained of color.
“Drop it!” Nathan shouted.
Vanessa’s hand loosened.
The mug fell.
Nathan caught it before it struck the floor.
For one terrible second, the room went silent.
Then Claire collapsed.
Nathan dropped to his knees beside her while another marshal forced Vanessa against the detergent shelves and cuffed her wrists.
“Claire, look at me.”
She could barely hear him over the roaring in her ears.
“My baby.”
“An ambulance is coming.”
“He told her,” Claire whispered.
Nathan looked toward Vanessa.
“What did you say?”
Vanessa twisted in the marshal’s grip.
Tears streaked her makeup, but her expression had changed. She no longer looked furious. She looked abandoned.
“He promised me she’d only be frightened,” Vanessa cried. “He said the closet had no cameras. He told me how to lock the door from the inside.”
“Who?” Nathan demanded.
Vanessa pointed toward the hallway.
Everyone turned.
At the far end stood Claire’s husband, Daniel Bennett.
He wore a dark business suit and no tie. His face was pale. His hands hung loosely at his sides.
He did not look surprised to see Vanessa.
He did not look frightened for Claire.
He looked at the mug in Nathan’s hand.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“You weren’t supposed to talk,” Daniel said quietly.
Vanessa’s mouth fell open.
Nathan rose slowly.
“Daniel,” he said, “put your hands where I can see them.”
Daniel took one step backward.
Claire watched from the floor as her husband turned and ran.
One marshal raced after him.
Nathan stayed with Claire.
A deep cramp tightened through her abdomen, followed by a warm rush beneath her dress.
Nathan looked down.
Blood spread across the gray tile.
“Claire?”
Her fingers closed around his sleeve.
“Don’t let him take her.”
“Take who?”
Claire opened her mouth, but the pain struck again.
Her head fell back against the wall.
May you like
The last thing she saw before darkness swallowed her was Vanessa being dragged from the closet, screaming the same sentence over and over.
“He said the baby wasn’t hers.”
