Chapter 3 - The Woman Named on the Secret File

Elena Ward looked nothing like Claire had imagined.

She was not wealthy.

She did not wear expensive clothes or carry herself with the confidence of someone who believed Claire was carrying her child.

She stood in the hospital doorway wearing wet sneakers, faded jeans, and a green raincoat several sizes too large. Her dark hair was pulled into a loose braid. She appeared to be in her early thirties, though exhaustion had carved shadows beneath her eyes.

Nathan searched her before allowing her into the room.

Elena accepted the search without protest.

When she finally faced Claire, tears filled her eyes.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

Claire’s hand moved protectively over her stomach.

“Why is your name in my medical file?”

Elena looked at Nathan.

“You found it?”

“Answer her,” Nathan said.

Elena stepped closer but stopped several feet from the bed.

“I went through treatment at Hawthorne four years ago. My husband and I created six embryos.”

Claire’s mouth went dry.

“What happened to them?”

“They told us all six failed genetic screening.”

“And you believed them?”

“At first.”

Elena reached into her raincoat.

Nathan immediately raised a hand.

“Slowly.”

She pulled out a folded document and placed it on the table.

It was a laboratory report.

Six embryo identification numbers appeared in a column.

Five were marked nonviable.

The sixth had no status.

“I noticed the missing code after my husband died,” Elena said. “I asked Hawthorne for the complete records. They claimed a software error had erased them.”

Claire looked at the identification number.

Her own embryo reports had used the same format.

“Why do you think it was transferred to me?”

“Because two months ago, someone mailed me a photograph.”

Elena unlocked her phone and showed them an image.

It had been taken from across a parking lot.

Claire was walking into a prenatal appointment with Daniel beside her.

Beneath the photograph, written in black ink, were five words.

YOUR DAUGHTER IS ALMOST HOME.

Claire felt the baby move again.

“No.”

Elena’s face crumpled.

“I don’t want to take your baby.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because Daniel called me this morning.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“When?”

“Thirty minutes before the attack.”

“What did he say?”

“He said Claire was becoming unstable and might hurt the child. He said I should prepare to file an emergency custody petition after the birth.”

Claire pushed herself upright.

“He planned to make me look dangerous.”

Elena nodded.

“He sent me psychiatric records.”

“I’ve never been hospitalized.”

“The records claimed you had postpartum psychosis after a previous pregnancy.”

“I have never been pregnant before.”

“I know that now.”

Nathan took Elena’s phone.

“Did Daniel ask you to do anything else?”

“He wanted me to meet him tonight at an old Hawthorne storage facility.”

“Where?”

Elena gave him the address.

Nathan sent it to his team.

Claire studied Elena’s face.

“Why did you come here instead?”

“Because I searched your name. I found your photography page and your charity work. I saw interviews where you spoke about infertility.”

Elena wiped her eyes.

“You didn’t look unstable. You looked like a woman who had spent years trying to become a mother.”

Claire looked away.

“You still think she might be yours.”

“I think someone used both of us.”

The words hung between them.

Nathan’s phone rang.

He listened for less than a minute.

“The storage facility is burning,” he said.

Elena closed her eyes.

“Daniel?”

“Fire crews haven’t entered yet.”

Nathan moved toward the door.

“I need both of you transferred to a secure floor.”

Claire caught his wrist.

“Do not leave me in the dark again.”

Nathan looked down at her hand.

“This case was sealed.”

“I don’t care.”

“It involves people with federal protection.”

“My husband tried to have my baby injured inside a locked closet.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“You’re right.”

He pulled the chair closer and sat.

“The federal witness who disappeared was Dr. Miriam Vale, the former laboratory director at Hawthorne. She contacted investigators six months ago. She claimed the clinic had switched embryos, sold genetic material, falsified parental records, and created children for clients who paid to bypass adoption laws.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Claire stared at him.

“How many children?”

“Dr. Vale believed at least forty-seven.”

The monitor beside Claire continued its steady rhythm.

Nathan leaned closer.

“She also claimed Daniel designed the legal structure that hid everything.”

Claire remembered Daniel’s late-night calls, unexplained travel, and refusal to let her view the full fertility bills.

“He chose Hawthorne,” she whispered.

“Yes.”

“He insisted we use that clinic.”

“Yes.”

“And now he wants me gone.”

Nathan said nothing.

A security alarm sounded outside the room.

Voices rose in the corridor.

Nathan stood and drew his weapon.

The lights flickered once.

Then every monitor in Claire’s room went dark.

Emergency power returned seconds later.

The fetal monitor restarted with a shrill alarm.

A nurse rushed in.

Behind her, a man in hospital scrubs pushed a medication cart.

Nathan looked at him.

The man froze.

Nathan’s gaze dropped to the tattoo visible above his glove.

A black circle divided by three white lines.

The same symbol printed on Hawthorne’s archived embryo labels.

“Get away from the bed,” Nathan ordered.

The man overturned the cart and ran.

Nathan chased him into the corridor.

Claire heard shouting.

A crash.

Then a gunshot.

Elena locked the room and pushed the medication cart against the door.

On the floor beside the bed lay a syringe the intruder had dropped.

Its label contained Claire’s name.

Beneath it, in smaller print, were two words.

FETAL TERMINATION.
