Chapter 7 - The Final Board Meeting
Mariana arrived at her company headquarters wearing a black suit and no scarf.
Employees turned as she crossed the lobby. Some tried not to stare at her shaved head. Others looked frightened on her behalf.
Mariana entered the conference room where the board members, attorneys, and senior executives were waiting.
Daniel sat near the far end of the table.
She had invited him under the pretense of announcing her resignation and appointing him as an interim strategic adviser.
Eleanor joined by video call from the house.
Daniel looked confident.
Mariana began the meeting with a presentation showing the company’s strongest financial year.
Then she displayed a second slide.
It contained a timeline of unauthorized transfers, forged documents, and attempted data theft.
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
“What is this?” he asked.
“A record of your business activities.”
He pushed back from the table.
“This is a private marital matter.”
“Stealing client information is not a marital matter.”
“You gave me access.”
“Our security records prove otherwise.”
Eleanor’s voice came sharply through the speaker.
“Daniel, leave. Do not say anything else.”
Mariana turned toward the camera.
“Good morning, Eleanor.”
“You ungrateful little liar.”
Every person in the conference room heard her.
Mariana placed the sealed evidence bag containing the clippers on the table.
“The laboratory confirmed that my tea contained your medication.”
Eleanor froze.
Daniel looked toward the door.
Two company security officers stepped inside.
Mariana continued.
“As of this morning, every account connected to my income has been separated. Daniel has been removed from all company systems. The board has approved emergency protections for our intellectual property.”
Daniel stood.
“You cannot humiliate me like this.”
Mariana looked at him steadily.
“You mistook privacy for protection. It was never the same thing.”
Helen entered with two investigators.
Daniel’s confidence collapsed.
He began claiming that Eleanor had planned everything. Eleanor shouted through the screen that Daniel had forged the documents without her knowledge.
Within seconds, mother and son were accusing each other.
