Chapter 6 - The Evidence They Left Behind
The laboratory found a prescription sedative in Mariana’s tea.
The medication had been issued to Eleanor three months earlier.
Helen contacted law enforcement and arranged for Mariana to give a formal statement. Because Daniel had accessed protected financial systems and attempted to obtain confidential client records, a federal financial investigator also became involved.
The evidence expanded quickly.
Daniel’s investment company had no legitimate clients. It existed mainly to receive Mariana’s money and apply for loans using falsified documents.
Eleanor’s company had purchased expensive jewelry, vacations, and a second property in Florida.
Daniel had also been communicating with a competitor interested in acquiring Mariana’s payment technology. In exchange for confidential files, Daniel had been promised a senior executive position after Mariana’s company collapsed.
The betrayal was larger than Mariana had imagined.
Yet the most painful evidence came from messages between Daniel and his mother.
She thinks she is untouchable because she pays for everything, Eleanor had written.
Daniel replied, Once she signs the ownership documents, we will not need her cooperation.
Another message, sent the night before Mariana’s hair was cut, read:
A public embarrassment will not work. We need to break her privately.
Mariana read the messages in Helen’s office without crying.
“Were you able to find the ownership documents they mentioned?” she asked.
Helen placed a folder on the desk.
“They planned to have you sign them after you resigned. The documents would have transferred control of your company shares into a family trust managed by Daniel.”
“And if I refused?”
Helen hesitated.
“We found a draft petition questioning your mental competence. Daniel had been collecting edited recordings of your arguments. He wanted to portray you as unstable.”
Mariana felt cold.
They had planned to steal her company, her home, and her reputation.
The haircut had not been an impulsive act.
It had been part of a strategy.
“What happens next?” Mariana asked.
“We secure a protective order, separate your finances, and prevent them from destroying evidence.”
Mariana shook her head.
“No.”
Helen raised an eyebrow.
“No?”
“I want them comfortable. Let them believe I am still in the house and still under control. They will keep talking. They will keep making mistakes.”
Helen studied her.
“That carries risk.”
“So does letting them disappear with two hundred thousand dollars and my company’s files.”
After a long silence, Helen nodded.
“We do it carefully.”
For the next twenty-four hours, Mariana played the role Daniel had written for her.
She spoke softly.
She apologized for threatening divorce.
She told Eleanor she would announce her resignation after one final board meeting.
Daniel embraced her and whispered, “This is the woman I married.”
