Chapter 3 - The Hidden Transfers

Mariana hired an external accountant after noticing several unusual charges on a shared credit card.

She expected to find irresponsible spending.

Instead, she found a pattern.

Over eighteen months, Daniel had transferred nearly two hundred thousand dollars from their joint account into a company registered under Eleanor’s name. He had used Mariana’s income statements to apply for loans and had listed her house as an asset supporting his supposed investment business.

Some documents contained Mariana’s electronic signature.

She had never signed them.

The accountant advised her to contact an attorney immediately.

Mariana did not confront Daniel. Not yet.

She quietly created a new bank account and redirected her salary. She restricted access to her business systems and ordered a full review of every device connected to the company network.

The security team discovered that Daniel’s laptop contained copied fragments of confidential product information. Someone had also tried to send client files to an outside address.

Mariana felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath her.

Daniel had not simply resented her success.

He had been trying to steal it.

That evening, she returned home and found Eleanor sitting in Mariana’s favorite chair, drinking tea.

“You look tired,” Eleanor said. “A woman your age should consider slowing down.”

Mariana placed her bag on the table.

“Daniel transferred money into a company registered in your name.”

Eleanor’s cup paused halfway to her lips.

Then she smiled.

“Daniel handles the family finances.”

“No. I handle them. I earn the money.”

“That attitude is exactly why your marriage is failing.”

Mariana stepped closer.

“Did you know he forged my signature?”

Eleanor stood.

“You should be careful with accusations.”

“Was that a threat?”

“It was advice. Daniel gave you a respected family name. He gave you stability.”

Mariana almost laughed.

She had purchased the house. She paid every bill. She had rescued Daniel from debt twice.

Still, Eleanor spoke as though Mariana were an unwanted guest.

When Daniel came home, Eleanor immediately told him about the conversation.

He followed Mariana into the bedroom.

“You investigated me?”

“I reviewed my own accounts.”

“Our accounts.”

“Then explain the forged signatures.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“I was building something for us.”

“You stole from me.”

“I borrowed money.”

“You used my house as collateral.”

His voice rose.

“You would have refused if I had asked!”

“That does not make it legal.”

Daniel stared at her for a long moment.

Then he said quietly, “You are becoming difficult to live with.”

May you like

Mariana understood the warning.

What she did not yet understand was how far they were willing to go.
