Chapter 5 - The Groom Who Would Not Ask

Margaret kept one hand on the desk.
“This is not Tiffany’s room for Saturday.”
Ethan entered and closed the door.
“She said the hotel gave her a second room for storage.”
“Did she tell you about the wedding dress?”
His eyes moved toward it.
“She ordered several dresses.”
“And the airline tickets?”
Ethan picked up one of the tickets.
His expression changed when he read Adrian’s name.
Margaret watched doubt appear, then disappear beneath anger.
“These could be for the honeymoon planning team.”
“Your honeymoon is in Hawaii.”
“Tiffany changed her mind.”
“To Lisbon?”
“She mentioned Europe.”
“With Adrian?”
Ethan set down the ticket.
“Why are you searching her belongings?”
“Because she used my financial authorization to book a second wedding.”
“Tiffany told me about the billing mistake.”
“It is not a mistake.”
Margaret took out her phone.
“I have a recording.”
Ethan stepped back.
“You recorded her?”
“The hotel did.”
“Of course they did. Because you told them to investigate her.”
“I did not know the recording existed.”
“You have never wanted this wedding.”
Margaret stared at him.
“That is not true.”
“You questioned the venue, the guest list, the flowers, and the marital agreement.”
“I questioned charges made in my name.”
“You offered to pay.”
“I offered to pay for one wedding.”
Ethan rubbed both hands over his face.
For one moment, he looked like the boy who used to wait outside her bedroom whenever he had a nightmare.
Then the door opened again.
Tiffany stood there with Adrian behind her.
Her eyes immediately moved from Margaret to the papers on the desk.
“What is she doing here?”
“I was asking the same thing,” Ethan said.
Tiffany rushed toward the desk and gathered the documents.
“These are private.”
Margaret held up the airline ticket.
“Why are you traveling to Lisbon with Adrian?”
Tiffany looked at Adrian.
He answered first.
“It is a business trip.”
“Scheduled the day after the second wedding?” Margaret asked.
Ethan turned toward him.
“What second wedding?”
Adrian hesitated.
Tiffany began to cry.
The tears came quickly, as if she had been waiting for her cue.
“There is no second wedding. This is exactly what I warned you about.”
She faced Ethan.
“Your mother has spent weeks trying to prove I am using you. Now she has broken into my room.”
Margaret played the hotel recording.
Tiffany’s voice filled the suite.
“The name on the contract must remain Tiffany Avery…”
Tiffany grabbed the phone and stopped the audio.
“That is edited.”
“It came from the hotel’s system.”
“Then she paid someone to create it.”
Daniel appeared in the doorway.
“No one was paid to create anything.”
Tiffany’s expression tightened.
Daniel continued.
“The recording is part of our verified service archive.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“This has gone far enough. We can discuss billing after the wedding.”
Margaret looked directly at him.
“Why is White Aster Events registered to your address?”
Ethan turned sharply.
“What is White Aster?”
Adrian’s face remained controlled.
“A consulting company.”
“Your consulting company is billing my mother for Tiffany’s second ceremony?”
“It is a vendor management structure.”
“Then why did you tell her you had never heard of it?” Margaret asked.
Adrian’s eyes flashed.
Ethan stared at his friend.
“You lied to my mother?”
“I did not want her turning a routine arrangement into an accusation.”
Margaret expected Ethan to demand the truth.
Instead, he looked at all of them and said, “Stop.”
The single word carried exhaustion rather than authority.
He faced his mother.
“I am getting married in two days. I cannot keep choosing between you and Tiffany.”
“You should not have to choose,” Margaret said. “You only have to ask which one of us is telling the truth.”
“I do not know anymore.”
The admission broke something inside her.
Tiffany took Ethan’s arm.
“Come with me.”
Margaret moved toward the door.
Ethan did not stop her.
As she passed Adrian, she noticed a blue mark on his right thumb.
Ink.
The same shade of blue used on the handwritten corrections in the second contract.
Outside the suite, Daniel followed her to the elevator.
“I am sorry,” he said.
Margaret pressed the lobby button.
“Do not be.”
“Are you still attending the rehearsal dinner?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Tiffany believes Ethan will choose silence.”
Margaret looked at her reflection in the elevator doors.
“She needs to believe that until I know what she intends to make him sign.”
The elevator began descending.
Daniel handed her a small security envelope.
“We found this beneath the desk in Bridal Suite Two.”
Inside was a torn piece of paper bearing Adrian’s blue fingerprint.
