Chapter 11 - The Woman in Seat 27

The ballroom descended into confusion.

Guests demanded explanations. Tiffany’s relatives began arguing with hotel security. The caterers remained inside the kitchen, uncertain whether dinner would continue.

Margaret focused only on Evelyn.

“Who gave them the seal?”

“I do not know,” Evelyn replied. “David never told me who else knew about the tracking copy.”

“You said someone inside the family.”

“Only someone with access to David’s private records could have known it existed.”

Ethan looked toward Adrian.

“You were never given access to those records.”

Adrian said nothing.

Evelyn continued.

“The seal was created after Marcus Vale’s fraud investigation. David believed someone inside Hale Development had helped Marcus.”

“Was that person ever identified?” Margaret asked.

“No.”

Adrian found his voice.

“This is a distraction. Evelyn is a frightened old woman with a damaged memory.”

Evelyn turned toward him.

“You searched my house because you were afraid of what I remembered.”

“I did not search your house.”

“Your driver did.”

Mara placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a black sedan entering Evelyn’s street the previous night. The license plate was registered to White Aster Events.

Adrian’s confidence weakened.

Mara spoke quietly.

“Evelyn saw the vehicle and left through the back garden before the men entered. She hid in an empty house next door until morning.”

“Why was her car in the hotel garage?” Ethan asked.

“She drove here at dawn,” Mara said. “She saw Adrian’s security team near the entrance and remained inside a maintenance area until I found her.”

Ethan faced his former friend.

“You sent men to frighten her?”

Adrian adjusted his cuff.

“I asked someone to retrieve company property.”

“From her home?”

“She had stolen documents.”

Tiffany touched Adrian’s arm.

“Stop.”

He pulled away.

The movement was small but final.

Tiffany stared at him.

“You said no one could connect the account to us.”

“You were responsible for the hotel contracts.”

“You prepared them.”

“You signed them.”

“So did you.”

Their alliance began collapsing in front of everyone.

Margaret stepped between them.

“Where did the extra wedding payments go?”

Neither answered.

She turned to Lucille.

“Seven hundred fifty thousand dollars appeared in the Avery Heritage Fund three months ago. Where did it come from?”

Lucille raised her chin.

“It was an inheritance.”

“From whom?”

“My former husband.”

“Where is he?”

“That is none of your concern.”

Graham entered the ballroom with two financial investigators. He carried a document envelope stamped by the state banking authority.

“It has become our concern,” he said.

Lucille’s face drained of color.

Graham handed Margaret a transaction report.

The Avery Heritage Fund had received money from a development project controlled by Adrian.

The funds had originally belonged to Hale Development.

Ethan read the report.

“This came from the Riverside housing reserve.”

Graham nodded.

The reserve was meant to guarantee completion of affordable housing units. If the money disappeared, hundreds of families could lose their deposits.

Ethan looked at Adrian with open disgust.

“You used company funds.”

“I borrowed against a temporary surplus.”

“You stole from homebuyers.”

“I intended to replace it after the trust transfer.”

Tiffany stared at him.

“You told me the money came from private investors.”

Adrian ignored her.

Ethan moved closer.

“You planned to use my inheritance to cover your theft.”

“It was not theft. It was leverage.”

“And Tiffany?”

“A necessary signature.”

The bride flinched.

“You said we would leave together.”

Adrian finally looked at her.

“There was never going to be an August ceremony.”

The words struck harder than Margaret’s canceled services.

Tiffany’s face collapsed.

“You booked it.”

“To move money through wedding vendors.”

“You bought the dress.”

“To make the transaction appear legitimate.”

“The tickets?”

“A contingency.”

“You told me you loved me.”

Adrian gave no answer.

Ethan watched the woman he had nearly married discover that the man she betrayed him for had never intended to keep her.

Margaret did not feel satisfaction.

Only sadness.

Tiffany had chosen greed, manipulation, and cruelty. Yet she had also been manipulated by someone more experienced and more dangerous.

Graham opened the state report.

“The White Aster accounts have been frozen. The Riverside funds are recoverable.”

Ethan exhaled.

It was the first piece of good news.

“The families will not lose their homes?”

“Not if the board acts today.”

“I’ll authorize the replacement funds.”

Adrian laughed.

“You cannot. The trust release transferred your voting authority to Tiffany.”

Ethan looked at him calmly.

“I did not sign it.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“The document in the private room…”

“Was a refusal notice prepared by Graham.”

Tiffany stared at Ethan.

“You knew?”

“Not everything.”

He looked toward Margaret.

“But I finally knew enough to ask.”

Adrian stepped backward.

Police officers entered through the ballroom doors.

Mara moved aside.

One officer approached Adrian.

“Adrian Vale, we need to speak with you regarding financial fraud, document theft, and witness intimidation.”

Tiffany turned toward the officers.

“What about me?”

No one answered immediately.

Then Graham looked at the state report.

“There is still one transaction we cannot explain.”

He showed Margaret the final page.

At midnight the previous evening, someone had transferred two million dollars out of White Aster Events.

The money had not gone to Adrian.

It had gone to an account named M. Hale Legacy.
