Chapter 13 - The Groom Finally Speaks

Ethan held the photograph as though it might burn him.

“Someone has been watching the house.”

Mara examined the background.

“This was taken from the trees beyond the east gate.”

“Our cameras cover that area,” Margaret said.

“Not the old maintenance road.”

Only family members and former senior employees knew the maintenance road still existed.

Graham searched the black envelope.

“There is no name, but these reports were prepared over several years.”

Ethan looked at Tiffany.

“How long were you given information about me?”

“Adrian gave me the first file before we met.”

“You knew where I would be that night?”

“Yes.”

Their first meeting had taken place at a charity auction. Tiffany spilled champagne on Ethan’s sleeve, laughed at herself, and offered to pay for the cleaning.

Ethan had always described it as an accident that changed his life.

It had been an assignment.

“The song you requested,” he said quietly. “My father’s favorite song.”

“It was in the file.”

“The book you gave me on our second date.”

“In the file.”

“The story about losing your father when you were young.”

“That part was true.”

Ethan laughed once, without humor.

“Was anything real?”

Tiffany struggled to answer.

“My feelings became real.”

“When?”

“I do not know.”

“Before or after you planned to have my mother declared incompetent?”

Tiffany lowered her gaze.

Ethan removed his wedding ring.

The room became silent again.

He placed it on the table beside the unsigned marriage certificate.

Tiffany began crying.

“Ethan, please.”

“No.”

“You said you loved me.”

“I loved the person you constructed from information stolen from my life.”

“I can explain.”

“You have explained enough.”

He turned to the guests.

For most of the evening, Ethan had spoken quietly. Now his voice carried across the ballroom.

“I owe everyone here an apology.”

Margaret started toward him.

He raised one hand gently.

“I need to say this.”

He faced the staff first.

“My family invited you here to celebrate a marriage. Instead, you were trapped inside a private betrayal. Every employee and vendor will be paid in full.”

Then he looked at the guests.

“No legal marriage will be filed. The officiant has been instructed to withhold the certificate while the fraud investigation continues.”

Tiffany covered her mouth.

Ethan continued.

“The Riverside housing funds taken through White Aster Events will be restored tonight. Hale Development will create an independent review board, and I will temporarily step away from financial control until that review is complete.”

Adrian’s scheme had depended on Ethan choosing reputation over truth.

Instead, Ethan was placing the company under investigation himself.

Margaret felt pride and sorrow at the same time.

Ethan looked toward her.

“My mother asked questions I refused to hear. She protected me when I accused her of trying to control me. I cannot undo that.”

Margaret shook her head slightly, but Ethan continued.

“I can make certain it never happens again.”

He faced Tiffany.

“You struck my mother because you believed I would remain silent.”

Tiffany’s face was wet with tears.

“You always chose her.”

“No. Tonight I finally chose the truth.”

An officer approached Tiffany and asked her to surrender her phone and passport while the financial investigation continued.

Tiffany looked toward Adrian, but he was behind the closed doors of the conference room.

He could not save her.

Lucille stood.

“My daughter is not leaving alone.”

The officer allowed her to accompany Tiffany.

As they crossed the ballroom, Tiffany stopped beside Margaret.

For a moment, the anger was gone.

“What will happen to me?”

“That depends on how much truth you are willing to tell.”

“Do you hate me?”

Margaret considered the question.

“No.”

Tiffany looked surprised.

“I hate what you chose to do. That is different.”

Tiffany’s mouth trembled.

“The woman with the ring told us you would never forgive anyone who threatened Ethan.”

“She was right.”

“Then why are you helping?”

“Because forgiveness and accountability are not opposites.”

Tiffany lowered her voice.

“She has another plan.”

“What plan?”

“I only heard Adrian mention a final transfer.”

“The two million dollars?”

“No. Something larger.”

“What?”

Tiffany looked toward the ceiling cameras.

“She called it the inheritance beneath the inheritance.”

Before Margaret could ask more, the officer led Tiffany away.

Ethan watched her disappear through the ballroom doors.

The guests slowly began leaving.

The flower arch remained standing, but several orchids had fallen to the floor.

Margaret picked up one flower.

“You should go home,” Ethan said.

“So should you.”

“I cannot return to the estate tonight.”

“You can always return.”

He looked at her.

“I do not deserve that.”

“Home is not a reward, Ethan.”

He closed his eyes briefly.

Then he hugged her.

It was not the polite embrace they had exchanged during the rehearsal dinner. It was the desperate, imperfect embrace of a son who had nearly lost his family while standing beside them.

Margaret held him.

For that moment, the mystery of the third account could wait.

Then Graham approached.

His face told her it could not wait long.

“We located the two million dollars.”

“Where?”

“It purchased something forty-eight hours ago.”

“What?”

Graham turned the laptop.

The transfer had been used to acquire a controlling interest in a private records company.

Ethan read the name.

“Hale Archive Systems.”

Margaret stared at the screen.

Hale Archive Systems stored every confidential document David had removed from the family company before his death.

Someone had not stolen two million dollars to become richer.

They had used it to buy David’s secrets.
