Chapter 7 - claire bennett

Claire Bennett was twenty-four years old when she disappeared.
She had been pregnant.
Eight months.
Single.
Working two jobs.
Her name appeared nowhere in Rachel's memories.
Vanessa knew her immediately.
When Detective Trent placed Claire's photograph on the interview table, Vanessa stopped speaking.
Rachel was not allowed inside the formal interview room.
She watched through glass from a nearby office with Margaret, who had returned after Noah was medically cleared.
The baby slept in a hospital-issued carrier beside her.
Daniel remained in Virginia under observation.
The Carter family had been separated across two states by one conspiracy, yet Rachel felt the pieces moving closer together.
Trent pointed at the photograph.
"Who is she?"
Vanessa looked down.
"Claire."
"Last name?"
"Bennett."
"How did you know her?"
"She came to the center."
"For what?"
"Prenatal support."
"Did you access her records?"
Vanessa whispered.
"Yes."
"Did you give them to Elise Marrow?"
No answer.
"Vanessa."
"Yes."
Margaret closed her eyes.
Rachel stared through the glass.
Trent continued.
"What happened to Claire?"
Vanessa rubbed both hands over her face.
"She wanted an adoption."
"Legal adoption?"
"At first."
"Then?"
"Elise offered her money."
"How much?"
"Thirty thousand."
Rachel felt sick.
Trent kept his voice even.
"In exchange for her child?"
Vanessa nodded.
"Did Claire agree?"
"For a while."
"What changed?"
"She met the couple."
"And?"
"She didn't like them."
"Why?"
Vanessa looked toward the mirrored window.
Rachel wondered whether she knew they were watching.
"She said they talked about the baby like they were buying a house."
Trent said nothing.
Vanessa continued.
"She changed her mind."
"What did Elise do?"
"She got angry."
"Did she threaten Claire?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"She said Claire had already taken money. She said she could be charged with fraud. She said the couple would sue."
"And you?"
Vanessa's voice cracked.
"I told Claire she should disappear for a few days."
Rachel frowned.
That was unexpected.
Trent did too.
"You helped her leave?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I finally understood Elise wasn't helping anyone."
"When was this?"
"January last year."
That was nearly eight months before the Hanover fraud began.
"So you already knew Elise was dangerous."
Vanessa nodded.
"Then why continue working with her?"
Vanessa began crying.
"Because Claire didn't disappear."
Rachel leaned forward.
Trent asked, "What do you mean?"
"Elise found her."
The room became still.
"How do you know?"
"Greg told me."
"What happened?"
"I don't know."
"Vanessa."
"I swear."
Trent watched her.
"What exactly did Greg say?"
"He said Claire would not be a problem anymore."
Rachel's arms chilled.
Margaret looked at her.
"Do they think she's dead?"
Rachel did not answer.
Trent asked the same thing.
"Did you believe Claire had been killed?"
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"I didn't know."
"Did you report it?"
"No."
"Why?"
"They had everything on me."
"What?"
Vanessa took a long breath.
Then finally explained the part she had hidden.
Months before Claire disappeared, Vanessa had accepted money.
Not gambling money.
Payment.
Elise paid her for patient information.
Five hundred dollars at first.
Then a thousand.
Then more.
Vanessa told herself the information helped connect mothers with adoptive families.
She never asked enough questions.
Then she began asking them.
By the time Claire tried to escape, Vanessa understood.
But she was already implicated.
Elise had records.
Transfers.
Messages.
Copies of patient files accessed under Vanessa's credentials.
When Vanessa threatened to talk, Elise reminded her that she would lose her job and possibly face criminal charges.
Then the gambling started.
Vanessa described it almost clinically.
An escape.
A private addiction.
A way to feel she could control something.
Instead it gave Elise more control.
Greg helped Vanessa hide the losses using Daniel's business accounts.
Every crime created leverage for the next.
Rachel hated Vanessa.
Then, for one dangerous second, she pitied her.
Margaret did not.
"She still had choices," Margaret whispered.
Rachel nodded.
That was the truth.
Fear explained.
It did not erase responsibility.
Trent returned to Claire.
"What happened to her baby?"
Vanessa looked confused.
"I don't know."
"You worked at the center."
"Her records disappeared."
"Who deleted them?"
"Elise."
"How?"
"She had access through another employee."
"Name."
Vanessa hesitated.
Then whispered.
"Dr. Nolan Pike."
That name mattered.
Rachel knew it.
Everyone in Charlotte knew it.
Nolan Pike was a respected obstetrician.
Charity board member.
Television medical guest.
He had delivered hundreds of babies.
Including Noah.
Rachel stared through the glass.
Margaret grabbed her arm.
"No."
Rachel remembered Pike entering Vanessa's hospital room the day after delivery.
Smiling.
Checking Noah.
Congratulating Daniel.
Telling them Vanessa needed rest.
Rachel suddenly remembered something else.
Pike had spent several minutes speaking to Vanessa alone.
At the time Rachel had assumed it was medical.
Now she wondered.
Trent asked, "Is Dr. Pike involved with Elise?"
Vanessa whispered.
"He's the reason Elise can make documents disappear."
Rachel sat back.
The conspiracy had just moved from criminals operating in parking lots and cheap hotels into hospitals.
Her world.
Her profession.
Her nephew's medical records.
Her brother's family.
Trent asked the question Rachel was afraid to hear.
"Was Noah ever part of their plan before this morning?"
Vanessa closed her eyes.
For a long time, she said nothing.
Then she nodded.
"Elise knew I was pregnant before Daniel's family did."
Margaret stood.
Rachel caught her arm.
Vanessa continued.
"She told me that if I ever betrayed her, she wouldn't need to hurt me."
Her eyes opened.
"She said she would take the one thing I couldn't replace."
Rachel looked down at sleeping Noah.
The story was no longer about Vanessa trying to sell a baby.
May you like
It was about Vanessa becoming trapped inside a machine she had helped build.
And that machine had already chosen its next victim.
