Chapter 11 - the network turns on itself

Dr. Nolan Pike had spent fifteen years building a reputation.
Elise Marrow destroyed his loyalty in less than fifteen minutes.
According to Pike, he had planned to leave the country.
He withdrew cash.
Packed one suitcase.
Bought a ticket under his own name because using a false identity frightened him more than police.
Then Greg called.
Elise wanted to meet.
Pike refused.
Ten minutes later, the brakes on his car failed while he was leaving a parking structure.
He struck a concrete barrier at low speed.
No serious injuries.
The mechanic who later inspected the vehicle found the brake line damaged.
Pike called police from the airport garage.
Not because he suddenly developed a conscience.
Because he realized he was disposable.
Rachel did not care why he talked.
Only that he did.
Pike confirmed the network.
Elise controlled contacts.
Greg handled logistics and intimidation.
Thomas Venn found adoptive clients and intermediaries.
Pike manipulated medical records when necessary.
Vanessa had initially provided access to vulnerable patients.
Other clinic employees unknowingly helped with scheduling, forms and data.
Some adoptive families knew they were cutting legal corners.
Many did not.
Elise blurred everything.
Private adoption.
Consulting.
Birth mother support.
Legal fees.
Travel costs.
The words sounded legitimate enough to hide the transactions underneath.
Pike admitted that Claire Bennett changed everything.
Claire threatened to expose them.
Elise demanded Pike delete records.
Greg tracked Claire.
Vanessa gave them the motel.
But Pike insisted Claire was not killed.
Rachel heard this from Desai just before midnight.
"He's sure?"
"He claims he saw her later."
Rachel stood from the hospital chair.
"Where?"
"At Elise's property."
"What property?"
"A farmhouse outside Rockingham."
Rachel's heart jumped.
"Is Claire alive?"
"We don't know."
"When did he see her?"
"About sixteen months ago."
That was two months after she disappeared.
"Why was she there?"
"Pike claims Elise kept Claire there for several days while pressuring her to sign documents."
"Then?"
"He says Claire escaped."
Rachel stared.
"Escaped?"
"According to Pike."
"Where did she go?"
"He doesn't know."
"Do you believe him?"
Desai hesitated.
"Parts."
That was becoming the story of everyone involved.
Parts.
Truth mixed with self-preservation.
Federal agents joined the investigation overnight.
Search warrants multiplied.
The farmhouse was raided before dawn.
Empty.
No Claire.
But there were signs someone had lived there.
Old women's clothing.
Prenatal vitamins.
A mattress.
A broken phone.
And words scratched into the underside of a wooden drawer.
C.B. 1 14.
Claire Bennett.
January 14.
The date fell four days after her official disappearance.
She had been there.
Then dogs found a path into woods behind the house.
Rachel refused to ask what they were looking for.
Several hours later, Desai called.
"No remains."
Rachel exhaled.
"Anything?"
"Footprints are impossible after this much time. But there was an old bus ticket receipt in a drainage pipe near the property."
"To where?"
"Richmond."
Rachel looked toward Daniel's bed on the video screen.
Richmond.
The same city where Daniel had been attacked.
Coincidence.
Probably.
But the destination gave investigators somewhere to search.
Claire's sister, Megan, received the news.
She cried when told Claire may have survived.
Then she gave police one detail nobody had known.
Claire had a childhood friend in Richmond.
Sarah Cole.
Sarah had moved away years earlier.
Police found her.
Sarah denied seeing Claire.
For nine minutes.
Then she broke down.
Claire had arrived at her apartment in January.
Bruised.
Terrified.
Pregnant.
She begged Sarah not to call police.
Elise had told Claire that Vanessa had reported her for fraud and that police would arrest her.
The lie worked.
Claire believed she was a criminal.
Sarah helped her.
Two weeks later Claire went into labor.
She delivered a baby girl at a small hospital under Sarah's surname.
The child was healthy.
Claire refused all adoption contact.
Then Claire disappeared again.
Rachel's hope collapsed.
"What happened?"
Sarah claimed Claire left voluntarily.
"Why?"
"She thought Elise had found her."
"Did she take the baby?"
"No."
Rachel stared at Desai.
"What?"
"Claire left her daughter with Sarah."
"Where is the child?"
"Safe."
Rachel sat down.
Claire's daughter was alive.
Nearly two years old.
Living with Sarah under an informal guardianship that later became legal after Claire could not be located.
"Does Claire know?"
"We don't know."
"Does Sarah know where Claire went?"
"No."
But Claire left something behind.
A letter.
It said if she disappeared, Sarah should never let anyone named Elise, Greg or Vanessa near the child.
Vanessa's name.
Rachel closed her eyes.
Claire had remembered who betrayed her.
Sarah had kept the letter.
Federal investigators now had it.
The network continued collapsing.
Pike gave them financial accounts.
Vanessa gave them passwords.
Daniel's Hanover records connected shell companies.
The storage unit supplied names.
The Mercers and other families cooperated.
Then Greg was arrested.
He was caught entering a bus station in Knoxville.
He carried seventeen thousand dollars and two identification cards.
One belonged to him.
The other did not.
Elise remained missing.
Thomas Venn remained missing.
But Greg talked after learning Pike had surrendered.
He gave police Venn's location.
Atlanta.
Venn was arrested that night.
Then Greg offered one more thing.
Elise had a safe house.
Not the farmhouse.
A condo near Lake Norman.
Agents moved immediately.
They found the condo empty.
But warm coffee sat in the sink.
A television was still on.
And on the kitchen counter was a photograph.
Rachel.
Margaret.
Daniel.
Noah.
Taken outside the hospital less than twelve hours earlier.
Elise had not run far.
May you like
She had been watching the family.
And according to the note beneath the photograph, she blamed Rachel for everything.
