Chapter 12 - What Nathan Did After the Door Closed
Grace spent the night at the hospital.
Her injuries were painful but not life-threatening.
Nathan remained with Lily in the waiting room.
He had never spent four uninterrupted hours alone with a child.
By the end of the first hour, he had learned that Lily hated apple juice, liked crackers only if they were broken in half, and believed hospital elevators were secretly spaceships.
At midnight, she fell asleep against his chest.
Nathan did not move.
Michael Reeves arrived shortly after.
He looked at Lily.
Then at Nathan.
“You look terrified.”
“I am.”
“Good.”
Nathan almost smiled.
Michael sat beside him.
“Victoria has been detained for questioning related to today’s assault and the financial fraud warrants.”
Nathan looked at the floor.
“And Sarah?”
“Prosecutors are building it.”
“Not good enough.”
“It has to be.”
Nathan looked at Lily.
“I spent my entire career solving problems by moving faster than everyone else.”
“This one doesn’t work that way.”
“I know.”
Michael studied him.
“What are you going to do about Cole Meridian?”
Nathan looked over.
“What do you mean?”
“The Harbor Point documents will become public.”
“They should.”
“The board may remove you.”
“They can.”
“Creditors may panic.”
“They will.”
“You could lose control of the company.”
Nathan looked at sleeping Lily.
“I already know what losing something important feels like.”
The following Monday, Nathan called an emergency company-wide meeting.
He stood before three hundred employees in the main auditorium.
Cameras from major financial networks waited outside.
Nathan refused a prepared statement.
“My company concealed information that should have been public.”
His general counsel shifted uncomfortably.
Nathan continued.
“The decisions began under previous leadership. That does not remove my responsibility. I inherited the company, the profits, the authority, and therefore the consequences.”
He announced an independent investigation.
Full cooperation with regulators.
A compensation fund for Harbor Point families.
Release of archived environmental reports.
And his temporary resignation as chief executive until the investigation concluded.
The board chairman whispered, “Nathan, stop.”
Nathan did not.
“One woman tried to bring information forward four years ago. Her name was Sarah Miller.”
Grace watched the broadcast from the hospital.
Tears filled her eyes.
Nathan continued.
“She was ignored. Worse, systems bearing my authority were used to silence her.”
He did not discuss Lily.
He protected her privacy.
He did not discuss Victoria beyond facts already public.
He did not make himself a hero.
That mattered to Grace.
When he finished, Cole Meridian’s valuation dropped by nearly a third.
Nathan lost hundreds of millions on paper in one afternoon.
He returned to the hospital carrying two cups of coffee.
Grace looked at him.
“You resigned.”
“Temporarily.”
“You could lose everything.”
“No.”
She raised an eyebrow.
Nathan nodded toward Lily, who was asleep beside her.
“Not everything.”
Grace handed him Sarah’s letter.
“You should keep this.”
Nathan shook his head.
“It belongs to you.”
“She wrote most of it for you.”
Nathan accepted it.
Grace watched him.
“Are you going to fight for custody?”
The question startled him.
“Against you?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“She’s your daughter.”
“You’re her parent too.”
“I’m her aunt.”
“You raised her.”
Grace looked down.
Nathan continued.
“I won’t take her from the person who kept her safe.”
“What do you want?”
“To be her father.”
Grace searched his face.
“That sounds simple.”
“I’m sure it won’t be.”
“It won’t.”
“I’ll learn.”
Grace almost smiled.
Then Nathan’s phone rang.
Michael.
Nathan answered.
His expression changed.
“Where?”
He listened.
Grace sat straighter.
“What happened?”
Nathan ended the call.
“They found Evelyn Shaw.”
“The reporter?”
Nathan nodded.
“Alive.”
Grace stared.
“Where has she been?”
“Arizona.”
“Why did she disappear?”
