THE MOMENT LILY SAID DADDY / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Kitchen

The investigation intensified.

Victoria stopped coming to the mansion.

Her attorney instructed her not to contact Nathan.

Nathan changed every security code.

Grace considered leaving anyway.

The house no longer felt safe.

Nathan understood.

“I can arrange an apartment.”

“I don’t want your money.”

“It isn’t about money.”

“It always becomes about money with people like us.”

Nathan flinched.

Grace regretted the wording.

But not enough to take it back.

Nathan said quietly, “Then choose the apartment yourself. Lease it in your name. I’ll have security outside, nothing more.”

Grace looked toward Lily playing in the garden.

“She’s getting attached to you.”

“I’m getting attached to her.”

“That scares me.”

“Why?”

“Because if this gets ugly…”

“It already is.”

“If you decide fatherhood is too much…”

Nathan’s face hardened.

“I won’t.”

“You can’t know that.”

“I know I lost four years.”

“You didn’t lose them. You never had them.”

The distinction hurt.

Grace continued.

“Lily lost them.”

Nathan nodded.

“You’re right.”

Grace stared at him.

He never defended himself.

That made it harder to remain angry.

“I need time.”

“You have it.”

Grace decided they would leave after the weekend.

She never got the chance.

On Saturday afternoon, Nathan went to New York for an emergency board meeting.

Mrs. Dawson visited her sister.

Security rotated shifts at three.

Grace was cleaning the kitchen while Lily colored at the breakfast table.

At 3:17 p.m., Victoria entered through the side door.

Grace froze.

Victoria wore an elegant cream dress.

Her blonde hair was tied back.

In one hand, she held a black wooden hockey stick from the mudroom.

“How did you get in?”

Victoria smiled.

“This was my home too.”

“It isn’t anymore.”

“Where’s Nathan?”

“Leave.”

Victoria looked at Lily.

“Does she call him Daddy now?”

Grace stepped between them.

“Don’t come near her.”

Victoria laughed.

“You won.”

“This was never a competition.”

“It was from the moment Sarah smiled at him.”

Grace stared.

“You hated my sister because Nathan loved her.”

“I hated your sister because she was weak.”

“She wasn’t.”

“She spent four years hiding.”

“Because you threatened her.”

“She made choices.”

“You stole her choices.”

Victoria’s smile disappeared.

Grace continued.

“You stole Nathan’s too.”

“Stop.”

“You forged his letter.”

“Stop.”

“You stole the money.”

“Shut up.”

“You helped destroy Sarah’s life.”

Victoria raised the stick.

Lily screamed.

Grace moved in front of her.

“Run, Lily.”

Victoria shouted, “Nobody is going anywhere.”

Grace grabbed the mop handle.

Victoria knocked it aside.

The bucket overturned.

Dirty water spread across the floor.

Grace slipped to one knee.

Victoria kicked the bucket away.

Then raised the hockey stick.

“Move.”

Grace covered Lily.

“No.”

The first blow struck Grace across the shoulder.

Pain exploded through her arm.

She stayed in front of Lily.

Victoria lifted the stick again.

“Move, you pathetic bitch.”

The second blow glanced against the side of Grace’s head.

She collapsed forward.

Lily screamed.

Then a voice thundered from the doorway.

“VICTORIA!”

Nathan.

He had left the board meeting early after Daniel Price discovered Victoria’s old gate access code had been activated.

Nathan rushed forward.

He ripped the stick from Victoria’s hands.

“What the hell are you doing?”

“She attacked me.”

Grace stared.

Nathan threw the stick aside.

Victoria pointed toward Grace and Lily.

“That lying little trash belongs out on the street.”

Nathan’s expression became something Grace had never seen.

Not rage exactly.

Something colder.

“You just hit her while she was shielding a child.”

“She is manipulating you.”

Grace struggled upright.

Victoria shouted, “Throw both of them out.”

Nathan turned toward Lily.

The child was sobbing.

She peeked from behind Grace.

Then reached one hand toward Nathan.

“Daddy…”

Nathan froze.

Grace’s heart broke.

They had never instructed Lily to call him that.

She had chosen it herself.

Victoria went pale.

Nathan knelt.

“Lily?”

“I’m scared.”

His face changed instantly.

All the fury disappeared from his movements.

He reached toward her slowly.

“Can I pick you up?”

Lily nodded.

Nathan lifted her.

She clung around his neck.

Victoria stared at them.

Nathan whispered, “You’re safe.”

Then he looked toward Grace.

“Are you hurt?”

“I’m okay.”

She was not.

But Lily mattered more.

Nathan turned toward Victoria.

“How did you get inside?”

Victoria said nothing.

“Where is your phone?”

“Nathan.”

“Where?”

She began moving backward.

Nathan handed Lily to Grace.

“Stay here.”

Victoria reached the dining area.

Nathan followed.

Not touching her.

Not shouting.

That seemed to frighten her more.

“You knew Lily was mine.”

Victoria shook her head.

“Yes, you did.”

“No.”

“You knew before Sarah died.”

“No.”

“You knew before Lily was born.”

Victoria hit the edge of the dining table.

Nathan stopped several feet away.

“You stole four years from my daughter.”

Victoria screamed, “I saved you!”

Lily cried harder.

Nathan glanced back.

That stopped him.

Victoria saw it too.

“You would have thrown your life away for Sarah.”

Nathan looked at her.

“That was my decision to make.”

“She was nobody.”

Grace whispered, “She was Lily’s mother.”

Victoria laughed.

“She was a waitress who got lucky.”

Nathan’s voice dropped.

“You never understood her.”

“I understood exactly what she was.”

“No.”

He looked at Lily.

“She was someone who loved her daughter more than she hated the people who hurt her.”

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“And what about me?”

Nathan looked at her.

“What about you?”

“I gave you eight years.”

“You built eight years on a lie.”

“I made you successful.”

“We made the company successful.”

“I protected your name.”

“You used my name.”

“I loved you.”

Nathan’s expression softened for the first time.

But not in the way Victoria wanted.

“I believe you thought you did.”

Victoria’s face collapsed.

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Grace looked toward Nathan.

“You called the police?”

“No.”

Daniel Price appeared at the doorway with two security officers.

“I did.”

Victoria stared at him.

Then at Nathan.

She understood.

This time there would be no private settlement.

No hidden agreement.

No quiet disappearance.

Nathan walked back to Lily.

Victoria whispered, “You’re choosing them.”

Nathan stopped.

He turned.

“No.”

Victoria looked confused.

May you like

Nathan held Lily’s tiny hand.

“I’m choosing the truth.”
