Chapter 14 - The Woman in the First Photograph

Six weeks after Elias left the hospital, the Bennett estate became a home again.

The damaged security system was replaced by an independent network.

The nursery filled with soft light, clean blankets, and the restless sounds of a healthy infant.

Maya still woke from nightmares.

Sometimes she heard the metal rod striking her body.

Sometimes she dreamed of Northstar’s empty cribs.

But then Elias cried, and the present returned.

Adrian moved back into their bedroom only after Maya asked him.

Their marriage did not repair itself through one apology.

They attended counseling.

Adrian learned to answer difficult questions without hiding behind protection.

Maya learned that forgiveness could exist alongside boundaries.

Lena began searching for information about Margaret Vale.

She visited Margaret’s grave and placed white roses beside the stone.

The investigation confirmed that Margaret’s boating accident had been staged.

Celeste’s former driver agreed to testify that he sabotaged the boat under Daniel’s predecessor’s orders.

Lena finally learned the truth about her biological mother.

It did not replace Evelyn.

It expanded the number of women who had tried to save her.

One afternoon, a package arrived without a return address.

Security scanned it before Maya opened it.

Inside was the blue ledger.

The original.

A black ribbon marked page forty-nine.

That page contained no infant records.

It contained a photograph.

Evelyn stood in front of Northstar House with Charles, Diane, and Celeste.

The person cut from the basement photograph was visible here.

A young woman with dark hair held the blue ledger against her chest.

Maya recognized her immediately.

Olivia Kane.

Adrian’s private investigator.

The woman from the hotel photograph.

Maya called Adrian into the study.

He stared at the image.

“Olivia told me she had never been inside Northstar.”

“She lied.”

Maya turned the photograph over.

A message had been written in fresh ink.

ASK OLIVIA WHY EVELYN CALLED HER DAUGHTER.

Olivia did not answer Adrian’s calls.

Her apartment was empty.

Her agency records were false.

The license number belonged to an investigator who died eight years earlier.

Reed searched facial-recognition databases.

Olivia’s true identity appeared in a sealed juvenile record.

Her birth name was Rose Hart.

Evelyn Hart had registered her as a dependent twenty-five years earlier.

Lena read the report.

“Mom had another daughter?”

“Maybe,” Maya said.

Rose Hart had been placed in foster care at age six after Evelyn signed an emergency guardianship transfer.

No reason appeared in the public record.

At eighteen, Rose disappeared.

Years later, she returned as Olivia Kane.

“She contacted me first,” Adrian said. “She claimed she had evidence against Diane.”

“Did she arrange the hotel meeting?”

“Yes.”

“She wanted Diane to photograph you.”

Adrian understood.

“She created the blackmail attempt.”

“Or guided it.”

Reed traced Olivia’s recent movements.

She had rented a storage garage near the bank.

Inside, police found the motorcycle used during the ledger theft, the Northstar pendant, and copies of Maya’s medical records.

They also found a wall covered in photographs.

Celeste.

Diane.

Charles.

Adrian.

Lena.

Maya.

Red lines connected every person to Evelyn.

At the center was a photograph of Elias.

Beneath it, Olivia had written:

THE LAST CHILD COMPLETES THE CIRCLE.

Maya felt the old fear return.

“What circle?”

No one knew.

A laptop recovered from the garage contained encrypted files.

The only readable document was a letter addressed to Maya.

Dear Maya,

By now, Celeste has fallen, Diane has confessed, and Elias has survived.

You believe the story began when Diane demanded fifty thousand dollars.

It began before any of us were born.

Evelyn was not only a nurse at Northstar.

She founded it.

Maya stopped reading.

Lena took the page.

“That’s impossible.”

The letter continued.

Our mother created Northstar to save children. Celeste transformed it into a laboratory. Charles turned it into a business. Diane turned it into a weapon.

Evelyn spent the rest of her life trying to destroy what carried her name.

She saved you.

She saved Lena.

She saved Adrian.

But she could not save all of us.

You deserve the truth.

You are not ready for the cost.

At the bottom was a date.

October 14.

Three months away.

The anniversary of Evelyn’s fifty-thousand-dollar withdrawal.

Beneath the date were coordinates.

They pointed to a remote island off the northern coast.

Police satellite records showed no registered buildings there.

But recent thermal images revealed underground activity.

Adrian looked at Maya.

“We’re not going.”

Maya held Elias closer.

“Not yet.”

“You’re considering it.”

“She called Mom our mother.”

“Olivia may be manipulating you.”

“She probably is.”

“Then why follow her?”

“Because she knows what Mom tried to stop.”

Reed advised against any contact.

Federal agents began monitoring the island.

For two weeks, nothing moved.

Then a boat arrived at night.

One passenger stepped onto the shore.

A woman with silver hair.

Facial recognition identified her with ninety-eight percent certainty.

Evelyn Hart.

May you like

Maya and Lena’s mother.

The woman whose funeral they had attended six months earlier.
