Chapter 10 - The Button Maya Pressed

Pain consumed Maya’s body.
The floor rose toward her.
Her water broke.
Guests scattered while Lena rushed forward.
Two men wrestled the rod from Diane’s hands.
Maya waited for movement.
The baby kicked.
Alive.
Still fighting.
Maya pulled out her phone.
“You just destroyed your own life.”
She tapped SEND.
Package One went directly to every major news organization, the state attorney general, the federal financial-crimes division, and the medical licensing board.
Diane’s phone received a copy.
Her face turned white.
The package contained bank records, recordings of her threats, proof of Charles’s kidnapping, and footage showing her entering the ballroom with the weapon.
There would be no quiet settlement.
No family protection.
No disappearing evidence.
But Diane’s horror was not caused only by the files.
The message also confirmed that Maya had sent the fifty thousand dollars into the old Northstar tracking account.
A hidden recipient immediately attempted to move it.
The transaction gave federal investigators a live trail.
The money traveled through three shell companies before reaching an offshore medical trust controlled by Celeste Vale.
Maya had exposed the financial bridge between Diane and Celeste.
Paramedics lifted Maya onto a stretcher.
Adrian ran beside her.
“Stay with me.”
“I’m here.”
“Can you feel him?”
“He kicked.”
At Saint Catherine’s, Dr. Shah confirmed that Maya was in active labor.
The impact had caused placental bleeding.
The baby’s heart rate dropped.
“We need to deliver now,” Dr. Shah said.
Maya gripped Adrian’s hand.
“Do it.”
She was taken into surgery.
Outside, Lena waited with blood on her dress.
Reed arrived forty minutes later.
“How did Diane escape?” Lena demanded.
“She didn’t.”
“I watched her attack Maya.”
“The woman in custody was not Diane.”
Reed explained that the prisoner had been switched during a medical examination that morning.
A Vale employee wearing Diane’s face had entered the cell.
Diane had walked out wearing the employee’s uniform.
The replacement refused to identify herself.
The operation required access, planning, and cooperation from someone inside law enforcement.
“We have a leak,” Reed said.
Lena stared at him.
“Can Maya be protected here?”
“I don’t know.”
The answer terrified her more than a lie would have.
Inside the operating room, Maya heard machines and controlled voices.
Dr. Shah spoke behind her mask.
“The baby’s heart rate is falling. We’re moving quickly.”
Maya could not feel pain below her chest, but she felt pressure.
Adrian remained beside her head.
Then a small cry cut through the room.
Maya began sobbing.
“Is he all right?”
A nurse carried the baby toward the warmer.
Dr. Shah’s expression changed.
“What is it?” Adrian asked.
The infant cried again.
“He’s breathing,” Dr. Shah said. “But his blood oxygen is unstable.”
The neonatal team surrounded him.
Maya turned her head, trying to see.
“Let me look at him.”
A nurse briefly brought the baby close.
He was tiny, red-faced, and furious at the world.
Maya touched his cheek.
“Elias,” she whispered.
Adrian looked at her.
“You chose the name.”
“He looks like Elias.”
The baby was taken to the neonatal intensive care unit.
Maya began bleeding heavily.
The room blurred.
She heard Dr. Shah call for medication.
Adrian’s face disappeared behind a wall of moving bodies.
Then everything went dark.
Maya awoke hours later in intensive care.
Lena sat beside her.
Adrian stood at the window holding their son.
Elias was wrapped in a white blanket, a monitoring wire visible near his chest.
Maya cried when Adrian placed him in her arms.
“He’s stable,” Adrian whispered.
“Is he healthy?”
“The doctors are still testing.”
Maya kissed Elias’s forehead.
For one precious minute, Northstar, Diane, Celeste, and every lie disappeared.
There was only her child.
Then Lena turned on the television.
Diane’s arrest dominated every channel.
Footage showed her being dragged from the ballroom while screaming at reporters.
Federal agents had raided Vale Medical Group headquarters.
Celeste’s home was empty.
Her private aircraft had not left the country, but she had vanished.
The public release had worked.
Diane’s life was collapsing.
Celeste’s empire was under investigation.
Maya should have felt victorious.
Instead, Elias’s heart monitor began to alarm.
A doctor rushed in and took him from her arms.
“What’s happening?” Maya cried.
The medical team examined the infant.
One doctor looked at the laboratory results and went pale.
Elias’s blood contained an antibody that should not have existed in a newborn.
Dr. Shah entered with a sealed envelope.
“This was delivered to the NICU ten minutes ago.”
“From whom?” Adrian asked.
“There was no name.”
