Chapter 12 - The Observatory

Maya refused to bring Elias.

She also refused to abandon Lena and Charles.

Reed proposed a tactical operation using a medical decoy.

A lifelike infant simulator was placed inside a carrier equipped with audio, heat, and movement.

Elias remained in the hospital under armed protection.

Maya wore a concealed transmitter beneath her coat.

Adrian objected until Maya looked him in the eyes.

“She asked for me because she thinks I’m frightened enough to obey.”

“You are frightened.”

“Yes. That doesn’t make me weak.”

Adrian could not accompany her openly.

He joined the federal tactical team approaching through the forest.

At 3:40 a.m., Maya drove alone toward the mountain observatory.

Snow began to fall.

The road narrowed between black pine trees.

The infant carrier rested on the rear seat.

Maya heard recorded breathing from the simulator.

Even knowing it was not Elias, the sound tightened her chest.

The observatory appeared at the top of the mountain, a concrete structure beneath a rusted dome.

The main doors opened automatically.

Maya drove inside.

Daniel waited in the vehicle bay.

He wore a dark coat and held a pistol.

“You came alone.”

“Yes.”

“Leave your phone.”

She placed a decoy phone on the dashboard.

Daniel searched her coat but missed the transmitter woven into the seam.

He lifted the carrier.

Maya fought the instinct to snatch it back.

“Careful.”

Daniel smiled.

“You already sound like a mother.”

“You would know something about losing one.”

His expression changed.

“Diane told you.”

“She told us everything.”

“No. Diane tells whichever truth protects her.”

He led Maya into the facility.

The interior was modern, clean, and heavily secured.

Laboratory windows lined the central corridor.

Inside one room, Maya saw dozens of blood samples.

In another, an artificial womb system pulsed beneath blue light.

Celeste waited in the observation chamber.

Lena and Charles were tied to chairs.

Lena’s face was bruised but her eyes remained alert.

Celeste looked at the carrier.

“Open it.”

Maya placed it on a table.

“Give me the formula first.”

“You are in no position to negotiate.”

“My son is no use to you dead.”

“His cells remain useful.”

Maya’s hand trembled deliberately.

“I want proof the treatment works.”

Celeste studied her.

“You have Evelyn’s stubbornness.”

“You mean the woman who defeated you.”

Celeste’s smile vanished.

“Evelyn delayed progress. Nothing more.”

“She took me back.”

“She took a valuable subject and raised her to waste her potential.”

“I became a teacher.”

“Exactly.”

Maya moved closer to Lena.

Daniel blocked her.

Celeste opened a refrigerated compartment and removed a vial of clear liquid.

“This will suppress Elias’s immune response.”

“One vial?”

“The first dose.”

“And the rest?”

“You will receive it after the procedure.”

“What procedure?”

Celeste looked almost surprised by the question.

“Elias will remain here.”

“No.”

“You knew the price.”

“I came for my sister.”

“You came because mothers always believe proximity gives them power.”

Maya looked at Daniel.

“Did your mother believe that?”

His jaw tightened.

Celeste turned toward him.

“Do not listen to her.”

Maya continued.

“Diane became a monster looking for you. Did Celeste ever tell you that?”

“Diane sold me.”

“She tried to hide you.”

“She accepted money.”

“To recover me,” Maya said. “Maybe she did the same for you.”

Daniel’s grip on the pistol tightened.

Celeste stepped forward.

“Open the carrier.”

Maya placed her hand on the latch.

Outside, the tactical team waited for visual confirmation of Lena and Charles.

The observatory’s reinforced walls disrupted the transmitter.

Adrian heard only fragments.

Maya needed more time.

She opened the carrier.

The simulator moved beneath the blanket.

Celeste leaned closer.

A recorded newborn cry filled the chamber.

For a moment, wonder transformed her face.

Then she noticed the infant’s skin.

Too smooth.

Too still.

Her eyes sharpened.

“This is not Elias.”

Daniel aimed the pistol at Maya.

Alarms sounded throughout the building.

The tactical team had breached the lower level.

Celeste seized Lena and placed a blade against her throat.

“You brought them.”

Maya did not move.

“Let her go.”

“Tell them to withdraw.”

Gunfire echoed below.

Charles shifted his chair and drove his shoulder into Celeste’s legs.

She stumbled.

Lena twisted away from the blade.

Daniel turned his weapon toward Charles.

Maya grabbed the metal tray from the table and swung it into Daniel’s arm.

The pistol fired into the ceiling.

Lena kicked Celeste backward.

Adrian burst through the chamber door with Reed and two agents.

Daniel raised his weapon again.

Diane’s voice suddenly came through the facility speakers.

“Lucas, stop.”

Everyone froze.

Diane had been brought to a command vehicle to help access Celeste’s systems. She had found the internal communications channel.

Daniel stared toward the speaker.

“Don’t call me that.”

“You are my son.”

“You left me here.”

“I came back for you.”

“You came back for money.”

“I paid because Celeste would not release you.”

Celeste moved toward the emergency controls.

Maya saw her hand.

“She’s locking the facility!”

Adrian fired at the control panel.

Sparks erupted.

Daniel looked at Celeste.

For the first time, uncertainty entered his face.

“Did she pay you?”

Celeste remained silent.

“Did Diane pay you to return me?”

“You were valuable,” Celeste said.

The words destroyed whatever loyalty remained in him.

Daniel lowered the gun.

Celeste drew a hidden pistol from beneath her coat and shot him in the chest.

Diane screamed through the speakers.

Agents tackled Celeste.

Adrian caught Daniel as he fell.

Maya rushed to the refrigerator and seized the treatment vial.

Daniel gripped her wrist.

“Not enough,” he gasped.

“Where is the rest?”

He pointed toward the artificial womb laboratory.

“Behind… the blue panel.”

His eyes found the camera in the corner.

“Tell Diane…”

His voice failed.

Medical agents began treating him.

Maya ran to the laboratory.

Behind the blue panel, she found a case containing six vials and a digital drive.

A label read:

SUBJECT ELIAS BENNETT.

The tactical team arrested Celeste.

Lena and Charles were freed.

For one brief moment, it seemed they had won.

Then the observatory’s destruction alarm began counting down.

May you like

Celeste smiled from the floor.

“The formula cannot leave this mountain.”
