Chapter 9 - The Board’s Choice

The board representative handed the sealed envelope to Caroline.

Tyler remained standing beside his table.

“What is in that?” he demanded.

Caroline broke the seal.

Inside was the result of two emergency votes.

The first formally recognized Caroline as the creator and controlling owner of Project Beacon.

The second offered her the position of interim chief executive officer of Irwin Dynamics while the company completed an independent investigation.

Tyler laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You cannot run this company.”

Caroline looked at the man who had said the same thing when she asked to lead Beacon’s engineering team.

“You never believed I could build Beacon either.”

“I built Irwin Dynamics.”

“Grandfather built it. You inherited it.”

A quiet murmur spread across the room.

Tyler’s face reddened.

“You would have nothing without me.”

Caroline removed a folded letter from the project folder.

It was the final letter her grandfather had written to her.

She did not read all of it.

She read only the last sentence.

“Protect what you build from those who value ownership more than purpose.”

Several older employees lowered their heads. They remembered the company before Tyler transformed it into a monument to himself.

Caroline turned to the board.

“I will accept the position under three conditions.”

The room became still again.

“First, Beacon will not be sold for exclusive private control. It will be licensed to hospitals, emergency agencies, and disaster-response organizations under a public-benefit agreement.”

The acquisition representative listened without interrupting.

“Second, every employee who contributed to the project will receive recognition and compensation.”

Engineers standing near the back of the ballroom looked at one another in shock.

“Third, the company will cooperate completely with the criminal and financial investigations, regardless of who is implicated.”

Tyler stared at her.

“You are destroying this family.”

Caroline met his eyes.

“No. I am ending the damage you called family.”

The board chair extended his hand.

“Do we have your answer?”

Caroline looked around the ballroom.

She saw reporters, employees, investors, and officers.

She also saw Rosa Martinez, the delivery driver who had stopped beside her damaged car. Caroline had personally invited her.

Rosa gave her a small nod.

Caroline took the board chair’s hand.

“My answer is yes.”

Applause began at the back of the room.

May you like

It spread slowly, then rose beneath the chandeliers.

Tyler stood alone beside his untouched champagne.
