Chapter 8 - The Evidence Charlotte Could Not Hide

After the board announced Tyler’s suspension, Charlotte tried to leave.
Two officers blocked the nearest exit.
“This is outrageous,” she said. “I have done nothing.”
Officer Hayes opened a second folder.
“Charlotte Irwin, we need to ask you about payments made to Grant Pike.”
Charlotte’s face tightened.
Tyler turned toward her.
“What payments?”
She looked at him with disbelief.
“You know why I did it.”
“I did not tell you to damage her car.”
“No,” Charlotte replied bitterly. “You only told me to stop her from reaching the board.”
A camera captured every word.
Tyler stepped away from her.
“That is a lie.”
Caroline watched them turn on each other beneath the chandeliers.
For years, Tyler and Charlotte had presented themselves as an unbreakable partnership. But their loyalty had never been built on love.
It had been built on shared advantage.
The moment the advantage disappeared, so did the partnership.
Officer Hayes presented the garage footage, payment records, and Grant’s signed statement to the board’s attorney.
Charlotte’s confidence dissolved.
“I only wanted to delay her,” she insisted. “I never intended an accident.”
“You interfered with a vehicle,” Hayes said. “Intent does not erase consequence.”
Tyler pointed at Charlotte.
“She handled the garage. I had no involvement.”
Caroline stepped closer to the microphone.
“But you had involvement in the forged agreement.”
Tyler turned back toward her.
“That document was prepared by legal staff.”
Maya Chen opened the project folder.
“The file metadata shows that the false ownership statement was created on your personal computer.”
Another board member stood.
“And the instruction to copy Caroline’s signature came from your executive account.”
Tyler’s shoulders sank.
The investors who had surrounded him earlier now moved away from his table.
The acquisition company’s representative closed the silver presentation case.
“Our offer is suspended pending a full investigation.”
Tyler stared at him.
“You cannot walk away from a fifteen-million-dollar agreement.”
“We can when the seller does not own the product.”
The sentence struck Tyler harder than any accusation.
His entire career had been built on the belief that possession and ownership were the same thing.
He had controlled the company.
He had controlled the stage.
He had controlled Caroline’s job title and access card.
But he had never owned the mind that created Beacon.
Officer Hayes turned toward Charlotte.
“You need to come with us.”
As officers escorted her from the ballroom, she looked back at Tyler.
“Tell them you knew.”
Tyler said nothing.
Caroline expected to feel victorious.
Instead, she felt tired.

The people who had nearly destroyed her were finally facing consequences, but justice did not restore lost trust.
Some things could only be replaced by building something better.
