Chapter 7 - The Gala Begins

On the night of the gala, Tyler believed he had won.
The ballroom was filled with powerful guests. Reporters waited near the stage. The fifteen-million-dollar acquisition agreement rested inside a silver presentation case.
Tyler greeted board members as though nothing had changed.
Charlotte remained beside him, smiling beneath the chandeliers.
“Where is Caroline?” one investor asked.
“Recovering,” Tyler replied sadly. “The accident affected her more deeply than we first understood.”
Charlotte touched his arm.
“We are supporting her privately.”
At seven thirty, Tyler stepped onto the stage.
He spoke about innovation, responsibility, and family legacy.
He described Beacon as the greatest achievement of his career.
Some board members did not applaud.
Tyler noticed but continued.
Behind the ballroom doors, Caroline waited with Maya and Officer Hayes.
Her doctor had advised her not to attend.
Caroline had answered that she did not need to feel strong.
She only needed to stand long enough to tell the truth.
When Tyler prepared to sign the acquisition agreement, the board representative approached the stage.
“Before the signing,” he announced, “the board has authorized a statement from law enforcement.”
The doors opened.
Officer Hayes entered first.
Caroline followed with her cane.
The reaction moved across the ballroom like a wave.
Guests turned. Cameras lifted. Tyler froze beneath the lights.
Charlotte’s smile vanished.
Caroline walked slowly toward the podium.
Every step hurt, but no one saw her hesitate.
Officer Hayes placed the printed transcript before the microphone.
Tyler attempted to stop her.
“This is a private family matter.”
Hayes looked at him.
“Tampering with a vehicle is not a private family matter.”
Charlotte stood abruptly.
Several reporters began speaking at once.
Officer Hayes raised the transcript and read Caroline’s message.
Then she read Tyler’s response.
Call an Uber, Caroline.
The ballroom fell silent.
Tyler finally saw the bandages beneath Caroline’s dress.
For one moment, something resembling shame crossed his face.
Then fear replaced it.
He understood that the audience was no longer looking at him as a visionary.
They were looking at him as a father who had ignored his injured daughter because he did not want to interrupt lunch.
Caroline placed the Beacon folder on the podium.

The board representative entered carrying the sealed envelope.
The moment Tyler had designed to secure his legacy became the moment it collapsed.
