Chapter 7 - The Investigation
Serena did not allow the banquet to become a public trial.
She asked the chairman to continue the program in another part of the dining room. Howard escorted Adrian to a private conference room, where he was informed that he was temporarily relieved of leadership responsibilities pending a formal investigation.
Adrian demanded to know the charges.
“You will receive them through the proper process,” Serena said.
“This is based on a misunderstanding.”
“It is based on documented patterns and conduct witnessed by senior officers.”
“I touched your sleeve.”
“You seized my arm.”
“I made a mistake.”
“Yes.”
Adrian seemed relieved by the word.
Then Serena continued.
“But this investigation is not about one mistake. It is about what that mistake revealed.”
Over the following weeks, investigators interviewed more than thirty people.
The evidence was extensive.
Emails showed Adrian changing assignments after officers disagreed with him. Performance reports contained negative language that appeared only after safety objections or ethical concerns. Meeting records proved he had ignored technical warnings and later blamed junior staff for the consequences.
Maya submitted the dates, documents, and messages she had preserved.
Daniel Ruiz provided copies of retirement paperwork he had nearly completed because he could no longer watch talented officers being punished for telling the truth.
Adrian defended himself by claiming he maintained high standards in a generation that resisted discipline.
The investigators asked why those standards changed depending on whether someone praised or questioned him.
He had no convincing answer.
Serena attended none of the interviews.
She wanted the process to be fair, not personal.
When the findings reached her desk, she read every page.
The report confirmed abuse of authority, retaliation, improper conduct, and repeated failure to maintain professional leadership standards.
Serena closed the folder.
