Chapter 4 - The Empty Chair
The banquet began with soup, followed by roasted chicken, vegetables, and fresh bread.
Adrian spent the first course speaking almost entirely about himself.
He described difficult missions, demanding schedules, and the sacrifices required of people who carried real responsibility. He interrupted a retired captain twice and corrected a civilian historian on a minor date.
Serena listened without challenging him.
She asked simple questions about his unit, his officers, and his leadership philosophy.
Adrian mistook her interest for admiration.
“My people understand that standards are not negotiable,” he said. “Some younger officers require stronger guidance.”
“What does stronger guidance involve?” Serena asked.
“Consequences.”
“What kind?”
Adrian smiled.
“The kind they remember.”
Maya’s fingers tightened around her water glass.
Serena noticed.
She also noticed that Adrian never thanked the servers. When a young attendant accidentally placed a plate at the wrong setting, Adrian snapped his fingers and pointed at the mistake without looking at him.
Serena quietly exchanged plates herself.
During the second course, Adrian began criticizing an unnamed lieutenant who had challenged his authority during a maintenance briefing.
“Technically competent,” he said, glancing toward Maya, “but too emotional for command.”
Serena placed her fork down.
“Was the lieutenant correct?”
Adrian’s smile weakened.
“That was not the issue.”
“It seems relevant.”
“The issue was respect.”
“Can an officer be respectful and still disagree with you?”
Adrian leaned closer.
“You are asking a lot of questions.”
“That is how people learn.”
He studied her face, irritated by the calmness he could not control.
At the neighboring table, Howard Bennett watched without interfering.
Serena’s late arrival had not been accidental. Her meeting had involved the Inspector General, who had delivered copies of complaints connected to Adrian’s unit.
None had been signed.
All described the same pattern.
Humiliation. Retaliation. Isolation. Fear.
