Chapter 2 - Commander Vale’s Rules

Commander Adrian Vale enjoyed being feared.
He called it discipline.
Inside his unit, officers learned that disagreeing with him carried a price. A delayed leave request, an undesirable assignment, or a damaging sentence in a performance evaluation could appear weeks after someone questioned him.
He rarely shouted. Shouting created witnesses.
Instead, he smiled while delivering threats in a calm voice.
Lieutenant Maya Chen had once admired him. During her first month in the unit, Adrian praised her analytical skills and told senior officers she had leadership potential.
Everything changed when she corrected one of his calculations during a planning meeting.
The error involved an aircraft maintenance schedule. Ignoring it could have delayed operations and endangered the crew responsible for the inspection.
Maya spoke carefully.
“Commander, the projected turnaround does not include the required structural review.”
The room became silent.
Adrian looked at her for several seconds.
“Are you correcting me, Lieutenant?”
“I’m clarifying the maintenance requirement, sir.”
The next day, he removed her from the planning team.
A month later, her evaluation described her as technically capable but lacking judgment, respect, and professional maturity.
When Maya requested a meeting, Adrian closed his office door.
“You have talent,” he told her. “But talent does not make you important.”
“I only raised a safety concern.”
“You embarrassed your commander.”
“That was not my intention.”
“Intentions are irrelevant. Learn the rules.”
“What rules?”
Adrian leaned back in his chair.
“My rules.”
After that meeting, Maya began recording dates and preserving emails. She encouraged others to do the same, but fear kept most of them silent.
Chief Petty Officer Daniel Ruiz warned her that Adrian had friends in powerful places.
“He’ll claim we’re bitter because he demands excellence,” Daniel said.
“Then we need proof that excellence isn’t the problem,” Maya replied.
Two days before the Chesapeake banquet, Maya received an unexpected assignment.
Commander Vale had selected her to coordinate seating and assist at his table.
Daniel understood immediately.
“He wants you nearby so he can remind you who controls your future.”
May you like
Maya folded the seating chart.
“Then I’ll watch everything.”
