Chapter 6 - The Father Behind the Door

Samuel led them into a room filled with clocks.

Every wall held them: brass clocks, wooden clocks, railway clocks, pocket watches displayed beneath glass. Their ticking overlapped in restless waves.

Cole locked the red door and kept the pistol pointed toward Samuel's chest.

Mara stood between them.

"Are you my father?" she asked.

Samuel looked at her with an expression too complicated to name.

"Yes."

The word landed without ceremony.

Mara had imagined that moment in childhood, though she had never admitted it. In those fantasies, her father always had an explanation that repaired the years. He had been lost, imprisoned, or searching for her. He had never been standing in a room of clocks while a criminal held a gun.

"Why did my mother tell me you were dead?"

"Because I asked her to."

Mara flinched.

Samuel closed his eyes. "Meridian threatened both of you. Disappearing was the only protection I could offer."

Cole laughed. "You call this protection?"

Samuel's gaze hardened. "I call it surviving what you served."

Cole pushed the encrypted drive across a table. "Open it."

"I cannot."

"You designed the encryption."

"Evelyn changed it."

Cole pointed the gun at Mara's stomach.

Samuel's composure broke.

"There are two keys," he said. "One is biometric. One is a phrase."

"Whose biometric?"

"Mara's."

Mara looked at him. "My mother used me as a key?"

"She used something Meridian could not duplicate without exposing why they needed you."

Cole forced Mara's thumb onto a small scanner Samuel retrieved from a cabinet. The drive opened to a password screen.

"Phrase," Cole demanded.

Samuel shook his head. "Evelyn never told me."

Cole moved the gun toward Samuel.

Mara remembered the cassette, the blue ribbon, the childhood drawing Naomi had mentioned.

"Blue horse," she said.

Samuel stared at her.

Mara entered the words.

The screen unlocked.

Rows of transactions appeared, followed by maps, passport scans, and coded payment lists. Cole's breathing changed. He had expected money. He had found leverage.

"This is not the second ledger," he said.

Samuel looked at Mara. "No. It is a route map."

"To what?"

"To the archive."

A sound came from beneath the floor.

Cole turned.

Samuel slammed his palm onto the nearest clock. The room went dark. At the same instant, a panel behind Mara opened, and someone pulled her backward through it.

Cole fired once.

The shot shattered a clock face.

Mara fell into a narrow passage. Samuel followed and dragged the panel closed. They hurried down steep steps as Cole struck the hidden door from the other side.

At the bottom waited a woman in a police uniform.

"Chief Ada Monroe," Samuel said. "She has protected this house for eleven years."

Ada led them through a tunnel to an alley behind the cottage. A patrol car waited with its engine running.

"Naomi Vale is searching the southern highway," Ada said. "We can reach her in forty minutes."

A gunshot cracked behind them.

Cole emerged from the cottage window.

Ada fired at the ground near his feet, forcing him back. Samuel pushed Mara into the patrol car and climbed in beside her.

As they sped away, Mara looked through the rear window.

Cole stood in the road beneath the red door, watching them go.

He raised his phone.

Mara's own phone, taken earlier, rang in Samuel's pocket.

He answered on speaker.

Cole's voice filled the car.

"You still think this is about ledgers," he said. "Ask your father what Meridian bought the night you were born."

The line went dead.

Mara turned to Samuel.

His face had lost all color.

"What did they buy?" she asked.

May you like

Samuel looked at the road ahead.

"A child," he said.
